Chapter 117
"Had Joseph not woken up yet?”
“Yeah, all the vitals are stable, but for some reason, he still hadn’t regained consciousness. Roy was worried he might become a vegetable and never be able to speak. I told him not to worry since the brain wasn’t injured.”
Jessica said, “If he really can’t wake up, things would become very difficult.”
After eating dinner, the two of them started watching a film again.
Chris deliberately stayed up late, wanting to wait for news from the hospital.
Tomorrow was a workday, and Jessica was already so sleepy she closed her eyes in his arms.
Chris thought maybe they wouldn’t catch anyone tonight.
Just as he was about to carry Jessica back to the bedroom, his phone rang.
Jessica was startled awake in an instant.
“It’s the hospital,” said Chris.
The caller ID showed the name of the doctor on duty today.
Chris immediately answered.
“Ms. Green, Joseph in the ICU…”
“Is he awake?” Chris asked.
The doctor said, “No, he suddenly had a respiratory failure. He was rushed to the emergency room.”
Chris suddenly sat up. “How is that possible? I checked his vitals every hour, and there was no problem. Why did he have a respiratory failure?”
“We haven’t found the cause yet, but he’s in the emergency room now, and a large group of police just came in to make an arrest. Wh… what should we do?”
Sudden respiratory failure, Roy rushing in to arrest someone…
Could it be…
Was it the nurse?
Chris immediately stood up. “I’m going to the hospital now. Who’s the surgeon?”
“Joanna, she’s already in the emergency room, assisted by Jake.”
“Okay, I’ll be there in 20 minutes.”
Jessica had no sleepiness left and got changed with him to go to the hospital to check the situation.
“There’s something wrong with the nurse,” Chris said in unison with Jessica.
Chris drove, and Jessica sat in the passenger seat.
“The surgery went smoothly, and the ventilator was used properly. Aside from rejection, respiratory failure basically shouldn’t happen unless… the nurse miscalculated the dosage, causing passive respiratory arrest."
Jessica didn’t understand medicine, but she was quick-witted.
The patient was rushed to the emergency room, and Roy immediately went in to catch someone.
So the problem must be with the last nurse who entered.
Forty minutes ago, Chris had just checked the vitals one last time and was sure Joseph would wake up tomorrow.
He finally relaxed.
Unexpectedly…
“I had already suspected the Summit Infirmary nursing team had their people, but I didn’t expect Joseph to run into them this time,” said Jessica, staring ahead.
In the darkness, her eyes still shone brightly.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
Jessica said, “I wasn’t sure who it was. Since I’m not often at the hospital, I couldn’t confirm. Telling you early would only make you show concern about the nurses and expose us."
“The lead surgeon is Joanna, the head of the emergency department. If she’s the surgeon, then things would be fine.”
“We’ll see when we get there.”
The two sped to the hospital.
Chris went upstairs first.
Jessica went into the building 10 minutes later and called Roy.
As expected, Roy had caught a nurse.
Roy had been watching from the car.
He hadn’t suspected this nurse before, but after she entered and gave Joseph medication, he soon began to suffer respiratory failure, and all the monitors started alarming.
Roy immediately went in to arrest her.
The nurse didn’t realize she had been discovered yet and was still looking at her phone at the nurse’s station.
The next second, she was surrounded.
