Seeing his panic, Jessica let out a cold snort. "You had an accident and didnโt tell meโhow can I feel at ease like that?"
What she truly wanted was for Chris to tell her everything. But Chris stubbornly refused to open up.
"Jessica, legally speaking, weโre divorced. I can make my own decisions."
In truth, the moment Chris said that, he regretted it. The atmosphere had been good, and he shouldnโt have brought up the divorce to upset Jessica.
Sure enough, Jessica became angry and suddenly let go of his hand. "Are you really trying to provoke me right now?"
After a moment of silence, Chris reached out to grab Jessica, but she brushed him off. He knew Jessicaโs temper too well. After repeatedly bringing this up, it was no surprise she felt uncomfortable.
"It was my fault, but itโs still the truth."
Back at the Summit Infirmary, the matter regarding Chris was finally resolved. Under interrogation, the deceasedโs family admitted they were attempting extortion. They were also responsible for spreading the rumors online but hadnโt anticipated the consequences would be so severe.
Chris took two days off. After upsetting Jessica the day before yesterday, he planned to cook and bring lunch to her office. That was when he saw the flood of online apologies.
Only then did he learn that everyone who had incited public opinion or insulted him online had been served legal notices with preserved evidence. Now they were all begging for forgiveness, hoping Chris would be lenient.
It turned out that Jessica had done all of this for him. Chris felt a pang of regret. He shouldnโt have said such hurtful things to herโespecially not after she had come all that way just to help him, only for him to bring up the divorce and upset her.
The lunch he made was filled with Jessicaโs favorite dishes. Hopefully, it would help ease things a little.
After attending two meetings in the morning, Jessica didnโt return to her office until nearly noon. She hadnโt even had a sip of water when she was informed that Michael had already arrived in the lounge.
โWhatโs he doing here?โ Jessica became instantly irritated upon hearing Michaelโs name.
Shannon reminded her, โYou forgot? The Hall family assigned Michael to manage their entertainment company. Heโs here to discuss the endorsement deal for our jewelry line.โ
Jessica paused, then sighed and rubbed her forehead. She really had forgotten. She was genuinely exasperated with Chris.
That night in Tesalfield, they had parted on bad terms. Chris had gone back to his dorm, while Jessica had stayed alone in the hotel, sulking. After returning, she found out that the person who had hired online trolls and incited public opinionโฆ was none other than Michael.
Shannon had been quick. Before Michael could distance himself from the matter, he had already been exposed.

Jessica tried to remain calm and said, โGot it. Iโll head over now.โ
When Chris arrived at the company, the front desk recognized him and sent him straight up to the CEOโs floor via the elevator. Jessica and Michael were still in the lounge discussing business, with Shannon present.
When the front desk called in, Maggie answered the phone.
โSir.โ Maggie had a sleek bob haircut, a sharp and professional look with tailored slacks, heels, and perfectly painted red lips. Chris smiled politely. โHello, Iโm here to bring Jessica her lunch."
Maggie instinctively glanced toward the lounge, her gaze quickly flickering away. โThen please wait in the office, sir.โ
Naturally, the CEOโs office was luxurious and full of natural light. Chris placed the food on a small table and even brewed tea for Jessica.
Inside the lounge, Michael and Jessica appeared to be having a sentimental conversation, but each had their own hidden agenda.
โOnly the entryโlevel line? Jessica, thatโs not a good deal. I thought youโd assign me the luxury line. After all, this is my first project since returning home,โ Michael said with a pitiful tone, but in truth, he was dissatisfied with Jessicaโs arrangement.
