The realization stung him. They were still husband and wife. He had always considered himself a responsible partner—no hint of scandal, his financial support unwavering. Why then did she hold such deep-seated animosity? His job had often consumed his attention, perhaps neglecting some of her needs, but a conversation from her could have bridged that gap. Now, she was pushing for a complete separation, secretly renting a new place to escape their shared past.

As his thoughts spiraled, his frustration mounted, evident in his sharp tone. “Where’s Elizabeth?”

Albin, lifting an eyebrow in smug satisfaction, replied slyly, “Let’s head to her apartment. I’ve managed to uncover her new address. Have you seen Elizabeth lately? She looks even more enchanting, a newfound glow about her. How do I put it…?”

Albin scratched his head, searching for the right words, then, with a sudden spark of inspiration, slapped his thigh. “I’ve got it! She was once meek, like a modest housemaid, but now she’s blossomed into a dazzling rose, breathtaking and vibrant.”

Elijah’s face clouded with displeasure. “It sounds like you’re accusing me of mistreating her,” he retorted.

Realizing his blunder, Albin clamped his lips shut and hastily led the way. They walked in silence for a few paces before Albin, unable to contain his curiosity, halted and faced Elijah, his demeanor stripped of its usual levity. “Tell me, Elijah, do you love Elizabeth?” he inquired, his gaze piercing.

Elijah hesitated, his response guarded. “She’s my wife. I fulfill all the roles and responsibilities of a husband.”

Unsatisfied, Albin pressed further, his voice infused with sincerity. “Forget the duties and titles for a moment. I’m asking about your heart. Do you feel love for her?”
