Chapter 101
When Debra arrived at Ericaโs company, Erica was ecstatically jumping around, looking at the newly deposited sum.
โDebra! Youโre amazing! That jerk must be feeling miserable now, huh?โ
Erica hadnโt expected Juan to compensate such a large amount, but she wouldnโt reject it. Despite the minor uproar, this was a win for her.
โThe compensation came through?โ Debra asked.
It had only been an hour, sooner than Erica had expected.
โI bet he used his personal account to transfer the money. Thereโs no way it could arrive this fast otherwise. Juan must be worried about losing face,โ Erica replied.
Seeing neither Marion nor Randy in the office, Debra asked, โWhere are they? Something this big happening in the company, why arenโt they here?โ
โYou know Marion. As soon as he heard about the trouble, he left and told me not to tell you. He probably knew early on that it was Juanโs doing and went off to plan his revenge,โ Erica replied.
Debra nodded thoughtfully. โItโs normal for Marion to seek revenge, but why keep it from me?โ
โI was just so angry today that I had to call you. If Marion finds out, heโll definitely be mad at me,โ Erica added regretfully.
Debra advised, โNow that everythingโs settled, call him back. Letโs not stir up more trouble.โ
Seamar City was Juanโs turf. Debra recalled Juanโs words: he held considerable sway here. Even though Marion had connections too, he couldnโt match Juan. Stirring things up could lead to chaos.
โDonโt worry. Marion knows what heโs doing. At most, heโll just cause a bit of trouble for Juanโs company,โ Erica said.
But on second thought, she felt unsure and took out her phone to call Marion. It rang once and then was disconnected.
Erica froze. โHe hung up on me.โ
Debra tried calling Marion too, and he answered.
โHe picked up,โ she said, puzzled.
โWhat?โ Erica flared up, ranting into the phone, โWhat the hell? You answered Debraโs call and rejected mine. Are you even my cousin?โ
Debra felt awkward.
Erica continued, โAnyway, youโre an unfit cousin, and I am very angry.โ
There was a moment of silence before Marionโs calm voice came through. โFinished?โ
โYeah!โ
โGive the phone to Debra.โ
โOh.โ
Erica rolled her eyes and handed the phone over to Debra.
Taking the phone, Debra said, โErica told me you were planning to retaliate against Juan.โ
โNot retaliation, just a little move,โ Marion replied. โIโve already sorted things out with Juan. Donโt worry about it.โ
โI have to,โ Debra said.
Marion paused and declared, โThis is a competition between men.โ
Debra was confused, not understanding what he meant.
As the sky darkened, Debra returned to the Nichols familyโs house.
