Chapter 136

Erica entered after Ralph left. She had been listening at the door. Although family feuds ran deep, she'd never heard of family members attempting to kill each other.

โ€œMarion has always been decisive,โ€ Erica mused, โ€œbut this time, he seems hesitant. Back then, he wouldnโ€™t have bothered with evidence. Heโ€™d have thrown them in a โ€˜black box,โ€™ and by the next day, his cousin would be half-dead. Handing him over to the police like this seems too easy for him.โ€

โ€œA black box?โ€ Debra looked puzzled.

โ€œI think itโ€™s some term in their line of work,โ€ Erica shook her head. โ€œRandy didnโ€™t elaborate.โ€

Debra fell silent. Someone like Marion, always walking a tightrope, must have his own methods. Otherwise, how could he inspire such fear?

โ€œHe probably didnโ€™t want to put you in a difficult position,โ€ Erica said. โ€œAfter all, Erbo has been treating you well.โ€

Then, with some frustration, she added, โ€œMarion knew you were in trouble, yet he didnโ€™t come right away. Doesnโ€™t he understand girlsโ€™ feelings at all? So disappointing!โ€

Suddenly, Randy coughed from outside. Erica sat upright and saw Marion standing in the doorway. His disheveled clothes indicated a hurried arrival.

โ€œI heard your complaints from miles away,โ€ Randy said, carrying in a basket of fruit.

He pulled up a chair next to Erica, while Marion silently took a seat on a nearby sofa. He acted as if he hadnโ€™t been to the Frazier familyโ€™s house at all.

โ€œErica was just about to rush to the hospital earlier, so I figured something must have happened to you,โ€ Randy said with concern. โ€œWeโ€™re all good friends. When something happens, you should let us know so we can support you. Tell me, who did this?โ€

He feigned ignorance. Erica raised an eyebrow and said, โ€œYou donโ€™t know?โ€

โ€œHow would I know?โ€ Randy looked surprised. โ€œIโ€™m not a mind reader.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ Ericaโ€™s tone shifted subtly as she saw Randyโ€™s weak look.

Randy looked away, unable to meet her scrutinizing gaze.

Debra chuckled and chimed in, โ€œThe culprit has been caught. It was just a family disagreement.โ€

โ€œFamily, huh? That complicates things. Otherwise, Iโ€™d have people snatch that brat and teach him a lesson,โ€ Randy sighed theatrically.

Erica rolled her eyes. She and Debra were not fooled.

Marion mumbled, โ€œAre you going to leave the hospital?โ€

Erica saw through Debraโ€™s hesitation. โ€œAre you still worried about Juan? Shelia is taking care of him. Why bother?โ€

Debra forced a smile. That was true. Shelia was there looking after Juan, and her concern was unnecessary.
