Chapter 201
Debraโs indifference mirrored Juanโs callousness. They were two sides of the same coin. She used him as readily as he used others.
Juan cast a frosty glance at Shelia, his voice dropping to a low growl. โIโm warning you, Shelia. If you dare employ any underhanded tactics to harm Debra, I wonโt stand idly by.โ
Shelia blanched and reached for his hand. โDebra doesnโt spare you a thought. She doesnโt care for you at all. But I truly love you. Remember the joy we shared that night?โ
โEnough!โ Juan snapped, shaking off her hand. His eyes flashed with dark intensity. โNever mention that night again. If you value your position at Tyson Enterprises, cease testing my patience. Otherwise, Iโll ensure Arcane Academy kicks you out.โ
Shelia froze, knowing Juanโs threats held weight. His actions always exceeded his words.
Juan turned and strode away, leaving Shelia rooted to the spot, a dejected figure in his wake. Joe glanced at her and said, โMiss Miles, consider yourself fortunate that Mr. Nichols hasnโt exposed your deceit. Know your place and abandon these fantasies of becoming Mrs. Nichols.โ He then followed Juan from the room.
Sheliaโs hands clenched into fists. โYou think you can dismiss me so easily? I wonโt let you have your way. The title of Mrs. Nichols is mine, and mine alone.โ
Across town, in her office, Debra gently pushed Michaelโs hand away. โEveryoneโs left for the day.โ
Michael offered a warm smile. โWho said I was merely helping you? I was genuinely concerned you might be having a fever.โ
Debra poured herself a steaming cup of tea. Michael continued, โBut you seem as full of life as ever, so I suppose youโre fine.โ
Setting the teapot down, Debra asked, โIs your work here nearly complete?โ
โIโll be wrapping up tomorrow,โ Michael confirmed, raising an eyebrow. โMiss me already?โ
She scoffed. โDonโt flatter yourself. Iโm just concerned that once youโre gone, things might become more challenging for me.โ
Lately, the female employees had been treating her with open hostility, whispering rumors that she was a power-hungry opportunist. Some even spread lies about her past, claiming sheโd taken questionable jobs to make ends meet during her school days.
She knew Shelia was the puppet master, but she couldnโt be bothered with such petty games. The McKinney Groupโs issues were more pressing, and she refused to waste her energy on trivial matters.
Michaelโs brow furrowed. โHave they started giving you trouble?โ
โNot yet,โ Debra replied, โbut I suspect they will once youโre gone.โ The female employees had been cautious while Michael was present, but Debra feared his departure would embolden them.
Michael fell silent, considering the situation. Debra reached out, giving his shoulder a reassuring pat. โIโll face whatever comes my way. I will be okay.โ
Michael chuckled, covering her hand with his own. โAs your loyal partner, I wonโt let anyone bully you.โ
She eyed him warily. โWhat are you planning?โ
He merely winked, placing a finger to his lips. โItโs a secret.โ
Debra shook her head, baffled by his cryptic response.
The following day, news of Michaelโs departure spread like wildfire through the company. Debra returned to her desk to find her once-organized workspace in chaos. Files were strewn about, and her computer monitor was plastered with sticky notes.
