Chapter 24

โ€œHowโ€™s it going?โ€ Randy asked.

โ€œShe passed,โ€ Marion replied.

โ€œShe passed? Really?โ€ Randy paused, finding it hard to believe. โ€œYou didnโ€™t use your connections, did you?โ€

โ€œShe got in by herself. It has nothing to do with me.โ€

โ€œOh my!โ€ Randy was astonished. โ€œDebra is quite something. But wait, wasnโ€™t her major linguistics? Thatโ€™s not related to this at all.โ€

โ€œDebra is a language genius, a woman who got her masterโ€™s degree at seventeen. Sheโ€™s not stupid.โ€ The moment Debra secured that piece of land, he sensed her determination. Things started to get more interesting.

The next day, at noon, Debra leaned against the window, reading a finance book. Sophie knocked on the door, reporting, โ€œMadam, the dressmaker and stylist are here. Is this the right time for you?โ€

โ€œIs there something?โ€ Debra asked.

โ€œDonโ€™t you attend the family banquet tonight?โ€

Debra frowned. There had been too much going on these days, and she almost forgot about returning to her family that night. She rubbed her temples. If it werenโ€™t for the monthly family banquet tradition, she wouldnโ€™t be willing to go.

โ€œI see. Send them in.โ€ Debra put down her book.

The Frazier family used to be a large clan, so they continued the tradition of holding a family banquet every month. And for this banquet, every member of the Frazier family had to attend.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Juan?โ€

โ€œMr. Nichols went out early this morning, probably for something important.โ€

Debra took out her phone and dialed Juanโ€™s number. He answered quickly.

โ€œTonight is the Frazier familyโ€™s banquet, and youโ€ฆโ€ Before Debra could finish, Juan interrupted, โ€œI have things to attend to.โ€

โ€œOkay, I see.โ€ Debra hung up.

Sophie advised, โ€œWhy not talk to Mr. Nichols again? This is the first time youโ€™ve gone back to your family since you got married. If he doesnโ€™t go with you, people might gossip.โ€

In fact, Debra was aware of what she would face if Juan didnโ€™t go with her. โ€œItโ€™s okay. Iโ€™m used to it anyway.โ€ Even without Juan by her side, she wouldnโ€™t be afraid of facing gossip from those nosy relatives.

As the sky darkened, Debra arrived at the Frazier family house. Most of the Frazier family members were already there. As soon as the gate opened, everyoneโ€™s eyes fell on Debra. She was wearing a blue dress, looking elegant and noble.

โ€œGuess whoโ€™s back? Ms. Frazier,โ€ Rosalie Copeland mocked. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t Juan come with you? Did you guys fight? Iโ€™ve told you before; itโ€™s much better to marry into the Copeland family. The Nichols family doesnโ€™t seem to value you much.โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t the youngest in your family almost forty? These people like second marriages. I donโ€™t have that preference,โ€ Debra retorted.

Rosalie gave her a stern look. Ralph Frazier nudged her, stopping her from saying more.

โ€œDebra, donโ€™t argue with Rosalie. Sheโ€™s just worried you might be mistreated by the Nichols family.โ€

Debra then softened her attitude.
