Chapter 139
In the past, Zoe would have been exhilarated to be so close to Jason. Now, she just wanted to leave.
"You're here," Jason said quietly.
Zoe adopted a pitiful expression and replied cautiously, "Mr. Reed, did you summon me for a specific reason?"
Grace looked confused. She didn't understand why Jason had brought Zoe there.
Jason smiled faintly and explained to Grace, "Sis, you don't know about this, do you? On the second night of Thanksgiving, your friend Lina met Miss Stevens. She made things very difficult for your friend."
Grace was stunned, but quickly grasped the reason. She remembered Lina defending her during their argument in the mall. Zoe, knowing Lina was Grace's friend, likely took out her anger on her.
Zoe's eyes widened when she heard Jason call Grace "Sis."
"No way! In Emerald City, who would Jason call that?" she exclaimed. The truth, however, was a street sweeper.
"Sis, do you want to know how she made things difficult for your friend that day?" Jason asked.
"How how did she do it?" Grace's heart ached as she recalled Lina's sacrifice.
"Why don't we let Miss Stevens demonstrate?" Jason said casually. He rose, went to the bedside, and helped Grace put on her shoes.
His movements were gentle and careful; he even knelt, holding her foot in his palm.
Zoe was shocked. Jason calling Grace "Sis" was surprising enough, but now this? What kind of charm did Grace possess to warrant such protection?
More alarming was Jason's request for a demonstration. How was she supposed to recreate it?
While Zoe pondered, Grace was shod, and Jason carried her to the sofa. He then said to Zoe, "Let's begin."
"Begin? Begin what?" Zoe's face was blank. Terrence, who had followed her into the ward, handed her a tissue and said gently, "Miss Stevens, please clean Miss Cummins's shoes. Just like the day Lina cleaned yours."
Zoe's face changed. "What? You want me to wipe her shoes?"
"This is Mr. Reed's request," Terrence said calmly.
Zoe gritted her teeth and glared at Grace. How could she clean the shoes of someone she despised? She couldn't comprehend Grace's hold on Jason.
"Mr. Reed," she burst out, "this woman is a street sweeper, a master manipulator who seduced my brother. He would never have fallen for someone from her background! Don't be fooled by her!"
