Chapter 292
Was it because life had made her more aware of the importance of money?
Seeing her expression, Lina Sweeney hugged her. โGrace, Iโve regretted for years not helping you sooner. I knew you were wronged, but I couldnโt find sufficient evidence to overturn the case,โ she said, each word deliberate. These words had been buried in her heart for a long time.
โEven when you were in prison, I could only offer small comfort during my visits. I hated that feeling of helplessness. Now that I have some leads, Iโll do anything to help you. Donโt worry about anything else, and donโt feel you owe me anything.โ
Lina Sweeneyโs voice, thick with self-reproach, filled Graceโs ears.
โLina, I might not have survived prison without your frequent visits and unwavering support. Your words werenโt just empty comfort; they gave me the courage to live,โ Grace said, returning the hug.
Both womenโs eyes were red.
After a while, they composed themselves. Lina Sweeney said, โIโll ask the private investigator to continue investigating; maybe we can find something useful. Donโt alert the witness. Otherwise, he wonโt admit to giving false testimony, even if you confronted him.โ
Grace nodded in agreement. Besides, after three years, she could afford to wait.
After Grace collected the materials Lina Sweeney gave her, Lina Sweeney said, โIโm driving; Iโll give you a ride home.โ
Grace hesitated slightly.
โAre you still staying at Jasonโs?โ Lina Sweeney asked, noticing her hesitation.
โYes.โ Grace pressed her lip, feeling the lingering ache where Jason had bitten her.
โHow long will you stay with him?โ Lina Sweeney asked.
โI donโt know,โ Grace shrugged, feigning unconcern. โItโs not so bad. At least Iโm well fed and treated.โ
Lina Sweeney knew she couldnโt intervene, so she simply said, โLet me know if you need anything.โ
โAll right,โ Grace replied.
They walked toward the parking lot, continuing their conversation.
โWait here. Iโll get the car,โ Lina Sweeney said as they stepped out of the elevator. Her car was parked nearby.
โSure,โ Grace replied.
Lina Sweeney walked toward her car. She took out her keys. Just then, another car approached and stopped in front of her, blocking Graceโs view.
A few seconds later, Grace heard a startled cry from her friend, followed by a car door slamming shut. Then, the black car sped past.
Grace hurried to the spot where Lina had been standing moments before. Lina Sweeney was gone!
Could Lina have been abducted?
Grace was shocked and instinctively ran after the car, but it was too late.
