Chapter 376
Shortly after, a neighbor informed Grace that her father and stepmother were on vacation and nobody was home. Evelyn, the neighbor added, had recently bought a larger house and rarely visited.
Grace realized her father and stepmother had deliberately left. They knew she would be visiting her mother's grave that day.
"Fifty million." The thought of her father's request numbed her scalp. With her current financial situation, she couldn't possibly produce that amount.
After saying goodbye to the neighbor, Grace called Evelyn. "Where are you? I need to see you."
"I'm sorry, I've been very busy lately," Evelyn replied lazily.
"I just need to ask one question: where did Dad move Mom's grave?" Grace asked.
"I don't know," Evelyn said mockingly.
"Then where are they vacationing? You must know."
"Oh, how unfortunate. I don't. I'll let them know you're looking for them when they return."
Grace heard a man's voice in the background. "This lipstick color doesn't suit you."
Recognizing Brian's voice, Grace was taken aback.
Evelyn, in a babyish voice, replied, "I thought you liked this color. I'll change it later."
Then, to Grace, Evelyn said, "Alright, that's it. I have things to attend to," and hung up.
Grace stared at her phone, feeling inexplicably unsettled. Just days ago, Brian had professed yet here he was, discussing lipstick shades with Evelyn.
Perhaps, she thought, Brian simply enjoyed novelty; his earlier words to her might have been a fleeting fancy. But men like Brian, she knew, often had multiple relationships. He had treated his previous girlfriends similarly, ultimately discarding them.
One such ex-girlfriend, once a rising star, had completely vanished from the public eye.
Grace pocketed her phone, her heart sinking. She couldn't afford fifty million, and she couldn't find her father and stepmother. Even if she did locate them in a few days, would they reveal her mother's grave's location? And at what cost?
She felt she had already hit rock bottom, yet the worst was yet to come.
Meanwhile, Brian watched Evelyn hang up. "Who called?" he asked casually.
"Someone looking for my parents. They're on holiday, so they contacted me instead," Evelyn said nonchalantly, moving closer to Brian. "Brian, what lipstick color do you like? From now on, I'll only wear the colors you prefer."
Brian frowned, his gaze returning to Evelyn's lips. He found the bright red annoying, no matter how he looked at it.
