Earlier, Kyla Corbyn had pulled Grace aside to ask about Jason. Grace had given a definite answer: “Yes, Kyla. He’s the Jason from Reed Group.”

Kyla felt as if she'd been struck by wave after wave of thunder. She was overwhelmed. Was the delivery girl in her restaurant Jason's girlfriend? Who would believe it?

When Grace mentioned more deliveries, Jason unexpectedly said, “Then I’ll wait for you here. I’m free anyway.” Grace left to deliver food, while Jason stayed and read his book.

Kyla felt confused. Why would Grace work for her when she had a boyfriend of this caliber? Was Jason serious about Grace? Their interaction, however, didn't seem fake; at least, not to Kyla.

After Jason finished his coffee, Kyla stepped forward and asked, “Would you like anything else, Mr. Reed?”

“Just a glass of water,” he replied.

Kyla gave him water. As she was about to leave, Jason said, “Wait a minute.”

“Is there anything else?” Kyla asked.

“Take a seat,” Jason said, pointing to the empty chair. “There’s something I’d like to talk to you about.”

Kyla felt uneasy but sat down.

“Grace wants to earn her own living, and I won’t stop her. She’s also impressed with you and your son. She seems satisfied with her job, and that’s why I’m letting her be. I just want her to be happy,” Jason said. His gaze was sharp.

Kyla's heart trembled. Her fear intensified. “My son and I… like Grace too.”

“Good. I don’t mind helping if you get into trouble, but I hope you’re sincere. Don’t take advantage of her. If you do, don’t blame me for retaliating,” Jason said lightly.

“How could I…” Kyla began, but Jason interrupted.

“Martin Weiss has been looking for you for years, hasn’t he? You cleverly bribed prison staff, went into hiding, and changed your registration information. He won’t find you easily.”

Kyla almost jumped. He knew! He couldn't have known without investigating her.

“You… investigated me?” Kyla asked, eyes wide.

“Yes. Since Grace wanted to work for you, I naturally conducted a background check on everyone in the restaurant. Grace doesn’t know, and I don’t want her to,” Jason said.

Kyla realized Jason was warning her. Did Grace know this man was protecting her in ways she was unaware of?
