Chapter 449
“Nothing. I just want to hold you like this for a while,” he whispered, burying his face in her neck and inhaling her scent. It felt as if simply hugging her offered him comfort.
Grace thought Jason's behavior was a little childish—like a child clinging to a precious toy. She was the toy.
She raised a hand and gently hugged him back. As her arms encircled him, his body trembled slightly. After a moment, his low voice reached her ears. “I like the way you’re holding me, Sis. Will you hold me a little longer?”
His tone was affectionate. She couldn't refuse.
“Sure,” she replied, continuing to hold him. They remained silent, letting time pass.
Early the next morning, Lina Sweeney arrived at the Reed Residence to pick them up, accompanied by Hadwin Stephenson, who served as the driver. However, the car was Lina Sweeney's less expensive vehicle.
At the Reed Residence gate, Hadwin Stephenson and Jason exchanged a look while Lina Sweeney ushered Grace into the backseat for their girlfriends' gathering, where they could converse more freely. Due to Grace's busy schedule, they only managed to meet every two or four weeks.
“Is Hadwin Stephenson driving later?” Grace asked, noting he had driven them there.
“Yes,” Lina Sweeney shrugged. “When it comes to driving, let the men handle it.” Hadwin Stephenson owned a multi-million dollar luxury car, but Lina Sweeney considered it too ostentatious for a visit to the detention center. She also worried about a potential accident if they switched drivers mid-journey. She was accustomed to driving her less-expensive car; even if it were damaged, repairs wouldn't be exorbitantly costly. Therefore, she insisted on driving.
Fortunately, Hadwin Stephenson didn't object and drove her car.
“Do you have any key questions you want to ask him today?” Lina Sweeney asked, referring to their purpose for the visit.
Grace nodded. “They're all in my notes, but I can't speak to him directly. He probably still remembers what I look like.”
“Hadwin Stephenson hired a mediator,” Lina Sweeney explained. “The mediator will ask the key questions.”
Grace hadn't anticipated Hadwin Stephenson's attention to detail. “By the way, how did the witness get into the detention center?” She found it suspicious that the witness was conveniently in detention during their investigation, especially with a mediator already involved.
Lina Sweeney chuckled. “Hadwin Stephenson arranged for a group of people to get drunk and cause trouble with the man. Then, he instigated a fight, resulting in the man's detention.”
Grace was speechless.
“That witness, You, wasn't a good man anyway,” Lina Sweeney added without sympathy. “He profited handsomely from your case and got off lightly with just detention.”
