Chapter 86
Quinn wore the Hue dress Cameron had gifted her. She paired it with an unassuming pair of black heels and slightly curled her hair into waves, pinning it to the back of her head. She looked very elegant yet humble.
The driver dropped her at the entrance of the Jakeman Estate. Someone was there to greet her. She presented her invitation and was directed to the registration table to sign in before being led into the garden.
Jakeman Mansion was very large and lavishly renovated. With the extra decorations for the wedding, the place was dazzling gold everywhere she looked. Each corner of the mansion showcased the owner’s materialism. The Jakeman family had only risen to prominence during David Jakeman’s generation. He was Zoe’s father and had suddenly become wealthy. The Jakemans were not fully accepted by the truly elite families as they didn’t have generational wealth. However, among the ranks of newly rich families, they were considered one of the leading ones. The Zeller family was in a similar situation as the Jakemans, which made them a well-matched pair for this union.
At that moment, the dessert table in the garden was surrounded by people. A live band was performing on the main stage, creating a lively atmosphere.
Quinn was not interested in the engagement party. After entering, she avoided the crowd and headed straight into the villa, hoping to find her mother, Luna Sinclair. As soon as she stepped inside, she noticed a waiter walking out. She approached him and asked, “Excuse me, have you seen Mrs. Jakeman?”
“Mrs. Jakeman? She should be with Ms. Jakeman. Her bedroom is on the second floor,” the waiter replied after thinking for a moment. “Thank you,” Quinn said. She was about to go upstairs, but something felt rather odd. She had always disliked her stepmother.
Two women who seemed like maids were coming down the stairs as they chatted.
“Say, Mrs. Jakeman really is a piece of work! Mr. Jakeman had already told her not to attend today, and Ms. Jakeman had given orders stating that she didn’t want to see her at the engagement party. Why is she getting all dressed up, ready to greet the guests?” asked one of the maids.
“Mrs. Jakeman? Mr. Jakeman is already planning to divorce her. Didn’t Mr. Jakeman say that we’re supposed to call her Ms. Sinclair from now on? You’d better get used to it, or Ma’am Jakeman will— would you?” replied the other maid.
“Right, thanks for the reminder.”
As they passed Quinn, she quickly stopped them. “Excuse me, sorry for the interruption, but may I ask a question? Is the Ms. Sinclair you were talking about Mr. Jakeman’s wife?”
Seeing that their conversation had been overheard, the two maids looked visibly nervous.
“There’s no need to worry. I just want to know where she is right now.”
The first maid pointed outside. “She’s in the annex.”
Recalling what they had just said, a feeling of unease immediately settled over Quinn. Was she really going to divorce David?
She left the main villa and walked around to the side. Next to the mansion stood a smaller, two-story house. In stark contrast to the lively atmosphere at the main building, this side was quiet.
She entered the building. Before she could go upstairs, she heard a sharp voice coming from above.
“Step aside! Why can’t I attend? I’m still Mrs. Jakeman, the lady of this house. What right do you have to stop me?”
“Ms. Sinclair, please calm down. Mr. Jakeman has already given his orders. You’re putting us in a difficult position.” A man’s voice was trying to reason with her.
