Chapter 48
“No need to trouble yourself,” Freya murmured, understanding that Isabella was likely video-calling Raven and Matteo. This meant Matteo was probably dining with Raven. She added softly, “It’s okay, let them chat. Don’t disturb them.”
After hanging up, Freya messaged Isabella, inquiring about her school day—new friends, lunch—and reminding her to listen to her teacher and nap when needed.
Over ten minutes later, she received a voice message: “I know, Mom. I’ll take a good nap.”
In the afternoon, after a full day with Sherry, Freya found her to be lively, sociable, and quite capable. Around 6 PM, as Freya prepared to leave, Sherry offered her dinner as a thank-you for the day's guidance.
“This is part of my job. You don’t need to be so polite, Sherry,” Freya replied.
Sherry insisted, but Freya’s phone rang—a call from her mother-in-law, Stella. Freya stared at the screen, surprised. Stella had never been fond of her and usually ignored her; Freya could count on one hand the number of times Stella had contacted her.
Puzzled, Freya answered, “Mom?”
“York has secretly been racing cars lately, and I’m worried about him. I’ll send you the address; go and bring him back,” Stella said briskly, then hung up.
A few seconds later, an address arrived—an outdoor race track. Freya told Sherry, “Sorry, I have an urgent matter to attend to. I need to leave now.”
More than an hour later, Freya arrived. The race track was large and bustling, even late at night. She called York, but he didn’t answer, forcing her to search for him.
After almost twenty minutes, she found him. He looked surprised. “Sister-in-law? What are you doing here?”
Freya explained. York raised his hand, exclaiming, “Today, my idol, the number one female racer in North America, CC, is competing for the first time since returning to the country! I didn’t want to miss it! I promise, after I watch the race, I’ll go back right away and won’t do anything reckless! So, sister-in-law, don’t worry. You can go back now!”
“But—”
Before Freya could finish, a large crowd began shouting “CC’s” name. “My idol is coming out?!”
York completely ignored Freya, joining the excited crowd, even grabbing binoculars to focus on the starting line. His face was full of fanatic excitement. Freya was taken aback. “When did you start liking racing?” she asked, knowing he hadn’t shown interest before.
“Before, I wasn’t interested in racing—but that was before I met my idol! You should see her, sister-in-law! She’s so beautiful and cool! Once you see her, you’ll understand why I’m into racing now! And I’m sure you’ll be just as fascinated by her! After all, she’s perfect; there’s no way anyone wouldn’t love her!”
At that moment, CC appeared. York went wild again, completely forgetting Freya. Freya realized she hadn’t had dinner yet. Seeing his excitement and the surrounding noise, she decided to stay and watch the race with him before taking him home.
