The scent seemed off. He hesitated for a moment but took a small sip. As soon as the coffee touched his tongue, he put the cup down and said, “Have her make it again.”
Chad was stunned. “Yes, sir.”
Sherry received the message and became anxious. “Make it again? Was it too sweet, or was the flavor wrong? I followed Freya’s steps exactly, and the sugar amount was correct. It shouldn’t have been a problem.”
“I’m not sure,” Chad said, offering little help.
Sherry had to make another cup. Nervous, she made another. This time, Matteo didn’t taste it; he only smelled it and put it down immediately, asking Chad, “What’s going on here?”
“Secretary Sherry may be nervous since it’s her first time making coffee for you. She probably didn’t get the right temperature…”
Matteo frowned. “Secretary Sherry? What about Freya?”
Chad froze. “Freya has already left the company. Didn’t you know?”
Matteo fell silent. He hadn’t known. He had been aware that Freya’s attitude had caused dissatisfaction with Chad, and Chad had wanted to dismiss her, but he didn’t realize she had actually left.
“When did she leave?” “Last Thursday.” “Got it.”
Freya had left, but likely only for a short time. He expected her return soon.
Chapter 67
Chad hesitated. “Then about the coffee…” “Take it away. Just bring me a glass of warm water.” “Yes, sir.”
By noon, Johnny left for a business meeting, leaving Freya to dine alone in the company cafeteria. Her colleagues greeted her politely, but their attitude lacked warmth. Freya didn’t mind.
After lunch, she returned to work, focusing on her tasks. Around 5 PM, she approached Simon and said, “I’ve almost finished. Can you take a look?”
“What?” Simon was momentarily confused. Looking at Freya’s work, he was initially baffled. But as he continued to read, his eyes widened in disbelief. “You… you finished it all?”
This was the work Yale had taken over ten days to complete! Freya had understood everything and finished it in just one day?
Freya nodded. “Mm.”
Simon was stunned, speechless for a moment. Then he realized Freya had not only completed the work excellently, but her input also offered fresh perspectives—ideas he hadn’t considered!
Others gathered, hearing the conversation, and were shocked when they understood. Regaining his composure, Simon looked at Freya with disbelief. “You… you’re really a graduate student?”
Freya paused, then answered truthfully, “I didn’t attend graduate school.”
How could this be? They were surrounded by PhDs and graduate students from top universities, and yet a mere undergraduate had surpassed them?
“Why didn’t you go for graduate school? Was there some difficulty at home?”
But looking at Freya, she didn’t seem like someone who couldn’t afford tuition. Moreover, with her impressive skills, she didn’t need to worry about the cost of education, did she?
Freya lowered her gaze and smiled faintly. “No, just some personal reasons.” She added, “Maybe in the future, I’ll consider further studies if the opportunity arises.”
After chatting and helping colleagues, Freya left the company around 7 PM. She walked out to find Johnny standing by the door. “You’ve cleared up everyone’s doubts on your first day and earned their recognition. As expected of you.”
Freya smiled. “Should I treat you to dinner?”
Johnny raised an eyebrow. “What else do you think I’m waiting here for?”
Freya chuckled and walked out with him. Twenty minutes later, at the restaurant, as Freya climbed the stairs, a child ran past her. She stepped back to avoid the child but stumbled. Just as she was about to fall, Johnny caught her waist, steadying her. Freya let out a relieved sigh, about to thank him, when she noticed Matteo and Levi nearby. They had seen her. Matteo stopped in his tracks.
