Felicia's nose tingled; Sebastian's words seemed to crack open the window she'd only dreamed of in her past life. Though faint, the sliver of light filtering through the gap offered a glimmer of hope in the surrounding darkness. She hoped that light wouldn't be extinguished. She nodded obediently, murmuring, "Mm," without arguing.
Unaware, an ear pressed against the door listened to their conversation. Later, a maid quietly reported Sebastian's words to Kayla, who was in the kitchen, meticulously cutting fruit. Determined to impress and secure her share, Kayla had volunteered to make orange juice when Myra casually expressed a desire for it. The maid's report ignited her anger; she furiously stabbed the knife into the cutting board.
Mina, startled, warned, "Ms. Kayla, be careful! Don't hurt yourself!"
Kayla, seething, glared at the knife, wishing she could use it on Felicia. "Such close siblings! What about me?" she spat, furiously jabbing at the oranges, creating a chaotic mess of juice splattered across the cutting board and table.
"Ms. Kayla, calm down. It's just Mr. Fuller's words; there's no need for this anger!"
Kayla's face remained impassive as she tossed the mashed oranges into the juicer. The buzzing machine masked her muttered words: "My dear brother, so ungrateful! Has he forgotten I'm his sister? He's met Felicia once and already protects her like a precious gem! He wants to make my life miserable, huh? I'll deal with both of them soon enough!"
The juicer stopped; Mina quickly brought a cup. After pouring the juice, she cautiously mentioned, "Ms. Kayla, I've done as you asked. But about my husband's dismissal..."
Kayla, during a previous trip to Alverton, had been involved in an accident with her driver, Ruben Waters, intending to fire him. Mina's plea had presented an opportunity; Kayla asked her to eavesdrop on Felicia and Sebastian. Holly, her formerly unquestioning follower, had been dismissed, leaving Kayla understaffed and inconvenienced.
Carrying the juice, Kayla declared, "Don't worry. As long as you continue to obey, Ruben keeps his job."
"Thank you, Ms. Kayla. I can rest easy..." Mina sighed, relieved. The Fuller family paid well; aside from Kayla's occasional outbursts, it was a good position. A few more years' work could buy them a house back home.
Cleaning the table, Mina called her husband, "Ruben, good news! You won't be fired. I begged Ms. Kayla, and she agreed!"
Instead of happiness, Ruben replied, "Who asked you to beg her? Let her fire me if she dares. Does she think I can't handle her?" He was confident; the car's dashcam had recorded Kayla's instructions and bribe to Shawn to act against Felicia.
He sneered, "I'm not afraid of Kayla anymore. I hope she makes trouble. If she comes after you or me, she'll be begging me!"
Mina, worried about his recklessness, cautioned, "Kayla is spoiled and temperamental. Just tolerate her tantrums. Don't do anything stupid!"
"I know what I'm doing. Don't worry," he said, adding before hanging up, "Don't be scared. I have leverage over Kayla. If she crosses the line, stand up to her. We won't tolerate her nonsense!"
