Listen to this chapter:

Felicia smiled, but her eyes were cold, hinting at amusement. Kayla had arrived early that morning, using a flimsy excuse to keep Clive occupied. Was this merely to create an opportunity for Roberta?

The shard of glass under Felicia's foot suggested Roberta had sneaked back in after retrieving the medicine kit from the basement. Judging by the wall of bottles and jars—some containing medicine, others poison—Felicia doubted anyone would notice if anything went missing or was tampered with.

Interesting. Felicia breathed deeply, suppressing her anger and rising chill. She returned to her medical texts, pushing aside other thoughts. After helping the limping Roberta from the basement, Kayla immediately released her arm with disdain once they were out of Clive and Felicia's sight. "Did you get it? Hand it over."

"I got it," Roberta replied, biting her lip. Her face was pale. "But this is poison. What are you going to do with it?"

Roberta had asked Talia this before, receiving no answer. Now, holding the bottle, unease gnawed at her, especially after reading the label: "Lethal upon contact with blood, extremely poisonous, no antidote." Her heart trembled. Was this poison intended to kill someone? Would she become an accomplice?

"If you don't tell me what it's for," Roberta whispered, "I won't give it to you."

Kayla burst into mocking laughter. "Even if I tell you, what can you do?"

Roberta remained silent. Kayla moved closer, a sweet, malicious smile spreading across her face. "Alright, I'll tell you, since you're so eager. This poison is for Felicia. I want her dead!" Roberta's head snapped up, her eyes wide with disbelief. "She's your sister!"

Kayla laughed. "I don't have a sister, and I don't need one. I'm always the precious gem of the Fullers without her. She's in my way, so she deserves to die."

Roberta's breathing quickened, her hands trembling. "Murder is against the law!"

Kayla spread her hands, feigning innocence. "You stole the poison; what does that have to do with me?" She would simply find an opportunity to add it to Felicia's food or drink. There would be no evidence; she hadn't created or stolen the poison. No one would suspect her.

Roberta was furious. "I can report you!"

"Go ahead," Kayla countered, "but don't forget your mother's still in the sanatorium. Talia arranges for a doctor to give her sedatives daily."

"What if they inject her with something else one day?" Kayla clicked her tongue. She covered her mouth and giggled. "Oh, I almost forgot. You escaped from that village, right? Felicia saved you, didn't she?"

Roberta's face turned deathly pale. Her reaction confirmed Kayla's suspicions. "No wonder you were so eager to follow her and call her 'Aunt Felicia.' So she's your savior, huh? Then why didn't you escape together? And how did Felicia get injured?" With that key piece of information, the rest became clear.
