Chapter 40 Purpose Is Achieved, Biding One’s Time

Listen to this chapter:

In the large dining room, Hannah watched a video of Jane helping Charles into a residence; they then entered an apartment together. Though somewhat distant, the video was clear. It was them.

Hannah stared at the screen. She saw Charles transform upon entering the room, wildly kissing Jane. His eagerness was undisguised. In her past life, she and Charles had been married for ten years, and in all that time, she'd never seen him so fervent.

It felt somewhat ironic, yet Hannah felt little emotion. She had, after all, endured Charles's despicable behavior.

The video showed Charles carrying Jane onto the bed. They kissed, shedding their clothes…

"Hey!" Hannah's face darkened.

The phone in her hand was snatched away. She glared at Oscar. "What are you doing!" she demanded.

"Angry? Watching your fiancé with another woman?" Oscar raised an eyebrow.

"No," Hannah's tone remained unfriendly. "I just wanted to confirm."

"Miss Cooper, you don't understand men," Oscar said, pocketing the phone. "They rarely stop themselves unless…"

Unless what?

Hannah stared at him. He remained silent, then changed the subject. "I checked. They did. One hundred percent."

"I didn't need your help," Hannah snapped, resenting his interference.

"So, you want to see Charles's naked body yourself?" Oscar asked bluntly. He could be a gentleman, yet also a rogue, prone to crude jokes.

"Better not. There's nothing appealing to see," Oscar said, his words hinting at something more.

Hannah found conversing with him exhausting. "Nothing good on his body? So you have a great one?" she retorted.

"Yes, far better," Oscar declared confidently.

Hannah was furious. The narcissist! Only later did she acknowledge his perfect physique.

Ignoring her anger, Oscar said kindly, "Miss Cooper, aren't you worried about your parents? Your phone rang constantly last night."

Hannah's eyes widened in realization. "Where's my phone?"

How would she explain her absence to her parents?

Oscar produced her phone. "Why's it off?"

"It was making noise, so I turned it off," he said casually.

Hannah's temper flared again. Her parents must have been frantic. She switched it on, revealing countless missed calls—twenty from her parents, several from Susan, and the most recent, from Charles.

Gritting her teeth, she called Susan first.

"Hannah, if you don't call, I'm calling the police! Were you kidnapped by Oscar? Tell me, I'll have him arrested and beaten!" Susan was hysterical.

"No, I'm fine. I got drunk and slept at Oscar's."

"You slept there?" Susan's tone shifted.

"Nothing happened."

"He didn't…?" Susan was skeptical.

Hannah doubted it too, but nothing had happened. She was certain Oscar hadn't acted on his impulses. She had been married before; she knew how to judge. She'd always expected him to be predatory.

Was she unattractive to men? Charles wasn't interested; neither was Oscar.

Forget it. Hannah had given up on men. Their opinions didn't matter.

"Hannah!" Susan called sharply.

"I'm fine. Tell my parents we were drunk, and I slept at your place. Tell your family the same."

Susan protested, "Why should I lie for you?"

"Because you're kind," Hannah laughed.

"..."

"I'm hanging up," Hannah said, then added, "If Charles calls, give him the same story."

"Hannah Cooper, you've learned to deceive!" Susan's directness was unwavering.

"Soon, you'll see I'm not the deceiver!"

Hannah hung up. Their closeness negated the need for formality.

She turned to Oscar, who seemed unconcerned, idly playing on his phone.

"You'll keep the video," Hannah stated.

"Not expose it?" Oscar asked casually.

"Not yet," Hannah was resolute. "I want Charles to fall from grace at his peak!"

Oscar couldn't fathom her transformation. How could someone change so drastically? What had she endured? He'd pieced together her slurred words from the previous night: 'Charles, you killed my parents, destroyed my family, stole our fortune, and left me to die with a grievance. I'll get revenge!'

Were these just nightmare ramblings? Or was it the truth? If not a dream, how did she know Charles's actions? Too many questions. But Oscar kept his doubts concealed.

"I'm leaving," Hannah said, eager to depart the villa.

"Leaving in my clothes?" Oscar smirked.
