Chapter 83
Adrian suddenly let out a low, husky laugh but didn’t respond right away. He then pointed toward the door. “That person just now…” He trailed off, as if waiting for Celeste to pick up the conversation.
Celeste replied, “I plan to hire a traditional medicine practitioner for the clinic, so he can oversee things and see patients when I’m not around. The guy’s quite capable. I’ve already asked him to start tomorrow.”
Adrian suddenly moved closer to her as soon as she finished speaking. Celeste instinctively stepped back a few paces. “Mr. Wrenford, what’s going on?”
“You’re hiring a good-looking traditional medicine practitioner… Are you sure you’re bringing him in to see patients?” His voice dropped, his hand leaning on the counter behind her.
Celeste paused for a moment and softly said, “You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. He really is quite skilled. Besides, he’ll be wearing a mask while seeing patients. Who’s going to know what he looks like?”
“Well, others might not know, but you do.” Adrian’s voice was deep.
Celeste was confused by his words. She furrowed her brows slightly. “But I think you’re even more handsome, Mr. Wrenford.”
Adrian instinctively lowered his gaze, his long lashes fluttering with a barely perceptible tremor. Celeste couldn’t help but smile upon seeing his reaction. “You look even better, especially when you smile.”
Adrian coughed lightly and quickly removed his hand from the counter behind her. The corners of his lips lifted into a knowing smile as he turned away. “If my nephew heard that, he’d probably get jealous.”
Celeste gave a cold smile and picked up the discarded cardboard on the floor. “Mr. Wrenford, you’re overestimating how much I matter to him. To be blunt, he probably wouldn’t even bat an eye if I were kissing another man in front of him.”
Adrian turned back to look at her. His tone was casual but held a trace of amusement as he mused, “Oh? Is that so?”
Celeste casually tossed the cardboard into the nearby trash can. She didn’t respond to his response but said, “Too bad I wouldn’t do something so absurd. Otherwise…”
Chapter 83
“Otherwise, you’d really want to try it?” Adrian raised an eyebrow, his expression almost teasing.
She went still, and her throat clenched when she locked eyes with him. Her mind flashed to the scene of her and Adrian kissing. Although she had been drunk that night and could hardly remember the details, her mind couldn’t help but wander.
Adrian’s smile deepened when he noticed her prolonged silence. “I didn’t realize that you were so naughty.”
Celeste snapped out of her thoughts and almost instinctively replied, “No! I was just saying that!”
“Since you feel so strongly about my nephew, why not find a man to make him jealous? You often see him with Lucy. Doesn’t that bother you?”
“I stopped loving him a long time ago. So what’s there to be bothered by?” Celeste smirked. “Besides, I’m not that idle to just find some guy to make him jealous…”
Adrian shrugged. “I think the guy from earlier, the traditional medicine practitioner, seems pretty good.”
“Mr. Wrenford, where are you going with this? He’ll just be a colleague starting tomorrow. I haven’t thought about anything beyond that.”
“You can always come to me if it doesn’t work out.”
His reply stunned Celeste, causing her eyes to widen with surprise. Adrian didn’t shy away in the least when he met her gaze.
“Mr. Wrenford, you…” Celeste hesitated, unsure of how to respond.
Adrian calmly said, “What’s there to be nervous about? It’s just like a game.”
“It might be a game with others, but it’s really not the kind of game I’d play with you, Mr. Wrenford.”
His expression darkened slightly, but he didn’t say anything further. Celeste could feel the tension in the air, the atmosphere suddenly heavy and awkward.
