Chapter 121
I walked through the front door of the university and to the admissions office. I pushed through the door and waited at the desk. โHi, can I help you?โ The lady behind the desk was a tiny, old woman with curly hair. She walked over, surprisingly spry in her old age.
โI hope so.โ I smiled at her as my mom pushed through the door.
โThere you are.โ She smiled over the counter at the woman. โHi. I hope you can help us. We are here to get my daughter registered for her classes this semester.โ
โOh my. She is starting a little late. Hopefully, the course she wants is still open.โ She hustled over to the swinging half door and pushed it open. โCome here, you two. We will get you settled.โ We followed her back to her desk, and she pointed to the two chairs and settled behind her computer. โNow, why the late start?โ
I sat in the chair and my mom settled next to me. โI was at my fatherโs pack for the summer.โ
She froze mid-type and looked at me. โAlpha Amy Maclean?โ
โYes maโam, thatโs me.โ I smiled. Her hands shook a little.
โSorry.โ She tried a smile, but I lifted a brow.
โWhy are you sorry? You havenโt done anything wrong.โ I just shook my head and watched her shudder a bit. โAre you okay?โ
โIโm fine.โ She tried to smile, but it fell.
โAre you afraid of us?โ My mom offered a soft smile.
โNo, not exactly.โ She exhaled and looked at us. โAs you can probably assume, alphas are a lot to handle, and choosing courses can get a little hectic.โ She did her best to put on a brave front, but I could tell she was worried.
โWell, how about we start like this? Hi, Iโm Amy. I am not a typical alpha asshole, and I am hoping that I can get a spot in the computer science department, if at all possible.โ I offered my best disarming smile.
โI can attest that Amy will not be a problem unless someone makes it her problem, and then she will handle it.โ My mom laughed at her own joke, and I just shook my head.
โOh, thank the goddess.โ She smiled and looked at me. โYou are in luck. Computer sciences are one of the lesser-chosen majors. Everyone tends to go into business or the health sectors.โ
โSo I can still get a placement?โ
โYes.โ Her shoulders sagged. โYes, you can.โ She clicked a few times. โI just have to check your admissions. As an alpha, you get first pick of classes, but we like to check grades.โ She clicked through a few more pages and made approving noises. โFantastic grades.โ She clicked a few more times and then froze.
โWhatโs wrong?โ
โUm. Nothing.โ She smiled and then clicked a few more times. โI just looked at the teachers and I was surprised at who was teaching this semester.โ
โOh. Okay. Can we also set her up with a dorm and a food card?โ
I looked at my mom and lifted my brow. โWhy do I need a dorm?โ
โI think that sometimes, you might want to stay here if your classes run later.โ
โWhich is actually smart, since one of your classes starts at seven at night.โ Fuck. Ugh.
โReally that late?โ
She coughed. โYour professor for that class has a day job, and he has to come in after, so he asked for a late start.โ
Okay. โI can understand that then.โ I turned to my mom and nodded. โPlus, if Shannon is staying in the houseโฆโ
โWhich she is, because Morgan wouldnโt spring for a dorm room. So, you also need a place to study.โ My mom turned back to the lady. โMrs.?โ
โSandlewood. Mrs. Sandlewood.โ
โMrs. Sandlewood, is it at all possible for my daughter to get a single dorm room?โ
โLet me check.โ She clacked at her keyboard for a few minutes, and then she brightened again. โYes, we have one alpha single dorm vacant.โ She looked almost giddy. She clicked for a few more minutes, and the printer turned on. โLet me get you a few things, and then we can charge your food card.โ She got up from her desk and walked to the printer.
After a minute or two, she came back over and pushed the papers in front of us. โOkay, this right here is your schedule.โ She flipped to the next page. โThis is a map of the school to help you find your way. This one is your dorm room assignment. This is the map of the dorm building. The highlighted areas are your dining halls.โ She handed me all the papers and went over to a cabinet. She looked back at me with a weird look, and I had a sinking feeling.
