Chapter 492

I waved her off. โ€œI was fine, hurt, but fine.โ€ I smiled as she growled at me. โ€œI woke up with a burst of energy, so I went for a run.โ€ I sighed, pushing my chair back. I needed to move. โ€œEverything was fine, but then I sniffed a tracker from Vinceโ€™s pack.โ€

Rick stiffened. โ€œHow close?โ€

โ€œNot close enough. The shield hides your scent here, so donโ€™t leave the area, and you guys will be fine.โ€

My mom nodded. โ€œWe train directly next to the house. We donโ€™t go farther than that.โ€

โ€œI ran away from here, anyway,โ€ I smiled. โ€œI scented more than I ran. By the time I collected them all, I had five trackers on me, and we were running in giant circles.โ€ My mom snorted. โ€œNix shut off our scent and shifted to Megan. She hid, confusing the trackers and just enjoying herself.โ€ I smiled, but then I thought of Thane, and my smile dropped.

โ€œWhat?โ€ My mom grabbed my hand.

โ€œOne tracker was Thane.โ€ I met my momโ€™s eyes and watched her face fall.

โ€œNo.โ€ She shook her head.

โ€œYeah. The trackers searched for a while, but then Thane dropped to the ground. He spoke, saying he didnโ€™t want to find me.โ€

My mom raised her shoulder. โ€œOf course. Heโ€™s in love with you.โ€

I froze. โ€œWhat?โ€

My mom furrowed her brow. โ€œYou had to know, baby. Thatโ€™s why he asked to train with you.โ€ I felt my heart sink.

โ€œI was just good at tracking,โ€ I shook my head.

My mom smiled. โ€œBaby, he was hoping you would fall for him, but he wouldnโ€™t approach you until you came of age. He was really hoping to be your mate.โ€ She patted my hand. โ€œHe played it down, though. We talked before I left. He told me he was asking to transfer out.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s gone.โ€

โ€œHonestly, Amy, you might want to give him a chance.โ€ She laughed, but then her face fell. โ€œWhat did you say?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s gone.โ€ I was staring at the floor.

โ€œIโ€™mโ€ฆ what?โ€ Rick leaned over the table to look at my face.

โ€œThane and Clarke got into an argument about me. Thane said he wasnโ€™t going to catch us or hand us over to Vince. But Vince was there, and he hopped out. He snapped Thaneโ€™s neck, and the others snapped to attention.โ€ I swallowed, my mouth suddenly dry. โ€œVince said the brotherhood doesnโ€™t keep traitors alive. He told the others to help look closer to the school for us, and then Vince killed Thane.โ€ My mom slapped a hand over her mouth, but Rick slammed a hand on the table.

โ€œItโ€™s not your fault.โ€ I reeled back from the words to find Toya staring at me.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not your fault Thane was killed.โ€ She kept staring into my eyes. โ€œI know you. If you attacked six men, you would have been killed.โ€ Her words hit harder than I was willing to admit. โ€œYou are strong, but not immortal. You would have died.โ€

My momโ€™s fingers trailed over my clenched fist. โ€œAmy, sheโ€™s right.โ€

I shook my head. โ€œI know, but it doesnโ€™t change that it was my fault.โ€ I knocked on the table. โ€œAnyway, the brotherhoodโ€”whoever they areโ€”are closing ranks. That means something is going to happen soon.โ€ I wiped my face and focused on everyone. โ€œThat means we have to be quicker. We have days to strengthen our position in this war before they finally make their move towards the King.โ€

My mom stared at me for a second before looking around the table. โ€œOkay, then. Rick, get started on that laptop. Why donโ€™t we go strip the bedrooms upstairs and make sure everyone is in their bedrooms by tonight?โ€ My mom pushed away from the table. Then she turned to me. โ€œIf itโ€™s possible, I need you to ensure the houses are locked down, and that there is no way someone can get through the closet before you leave.โ€

I nodded. โ€œYeah.โ€

My mom turned to Lynn. โ€œLetโ€™s go for a walk before you leave.โ€ She held out her hand and waited for Lynn to join her. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€ The two turned and walked out the kitchen door. It all happened so fast, I think everyone was confused.

โ€œWhat was that?โ€ Alannah asked.

I smiled. โ€œMy mom doesnโ€™t like feeling out of control. She has to stay here to protect you, and me leaving for war is making her antsy.โ€

โ€œShe can go.โ€ Rick looked up from the laptop heโ€™d opened when my mom suggested it. Everyone with Wendyโ€ฆ

I nodded. โ€œI know. But I have a feeling sheโ€™s going to be needed here.โ€ I patted his arm. โ€œShe does too. Sheโ€™s okay with staying. Sheโ€™s just worried, thatโ€™s all.โ€ I pushed up from my chair. โ€œToya, make sure youโ€™re ready in fifteen minutes. Iโ€™m going to check the closet.โ€
