Chapter 493

I double-checked that the house in Vinceโ€™s pack was still secure. I could feel that someone had been trying to get in. There were boot prints on the front door, and cracks in the glass door. Thank you for the werewolf-proof glass! I used a little magic to fix the glass door and then reinforced the house before sealing my bedroom and closet doors.

I grabbed my second phoneโ€”the only one I could contact my dad withโ€”and left the other. There was no reason to carry it any longer. I sent a quick message to my dad, letting him know I was about to head to the pack house, then headed downstairs.

Toya was waiting near the front door. My mother and Lynn were still outside, but it was Carlyโ€™s patient face that slowed my steps. She looked up when she heard me and smiled, but I saw the sadness in her eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re leaving again?โ€

I nodded. โ€œI have to.โ€ She nodded. โ€œYou understand, right?โ€ I walked over, sat next to her, and pulled her to my side.

She nodded but picked at her fingers. โ€œI know.โ€ She sounded small. โ€œI just miss you.โ€

โ€œOh, sweetheart, I miss you, too. Once all of this is over, I promise youโ€™ll have me every day. Weโ€™ll spend our days here, in the pack, and traveling. Youโ€™ll get to go to school and make friends.โ€

She perked up. โ€œI can go to school?โ€

โ€œOf course!โ€ I ruffled her hair. โ€œOnce this mess is cleared up, weโ€™ll be able to do whatever you want.โ€

She smiled, but I saw it fade. โ€œYou promise youโ€™ll be careful? Even when itโ€™s all done?โ€

โ€œOf course, baby.โ€ I leaned over and kissed her temple, then stood up. โ€œGive me a hug before I leave.โ€ She jumped into my arms, and I squeezed her. โ€œBe good for Wendy and Grandma Ainsley, okay?โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ She pulled back. โ€œWhen you come back, can we visit my daddy?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€ I put her down on the couch. โ€œIโ€™ll see if I can get him here to sit with you and catch upโ€ฆhow does that sound?โ€

She nodded. โ€œGood.โ€ She paused, her eyes glazing over, turning white. Toya approached as she noticed the shift, too. โ€œBe careful, tri-spirit,โ€ Toya said, her voice deeper than normal. โ€œThe end is near, and if you arenโ€™t vigilant enough, you will lose your life. The shaman has seen the different paths that can unfold. Keep her words close to you. One misstep, and all is lost.โ€

I looked at Toya; I could see her mind racing. I shrugged. โ€œI will.โ€ Carlyโ€™s eyes cleared, and she smiled at me.

โ€œIโ€™ll miss you too, Aunty Toya.โ€ Carly threw herself into Toyaโ€™s arms and hugged her tight.

โ€œAnd I you, little mouse.โ€ Toya clutched her close. โ€œI cannot wait to have pups of my own because I know you will be a good big sister to them.โ€ Toya kissed her head. โ€œYou are just as much mine as you are Amyโ€™s. You know that, right?โ€ Toya pulled back, and Carly laughed.

โ€œI know.โ€ Then her face grew solemn. โ€œWatch over her.โ€ She looked at me. โ€œShe is going to need a lot of support and guidance.โ€

Toya smirked. โ€œAs she always does.โ€ They laughed together, and then Wendy entered the room.

โ€œAbby is waiting for you upstairs,โ€ Wendy said, pointing up the stairs. โ€œShe said something was ready?โ€ Wendy sounded confused, but Carly looked excited as she wriggled free of Toyaโ€™s arms.

โ€œThe tea party is ready!โ€ she squealed.

โ€œWhat?โ€ The three of us asked simultaneously.

Alannah emerged from the kitchen, laughing. โ€œAbby asked me to help her throw a tea party. Carly is the guest of honor.โ€ Alannah winked. โ€œBut Wendy is right. Ternen just delivered the snacks and drinks upstairs. Everyone else is already at her table. They are just waiting on you.โ€

Carly squealed and ran upstairs. I watched her go before quickly turning to Alannah. โ€œHow are you feeling?โ€ I raised my hand, waiting for permission before touching her swollen belly.

She laughed. โ€œI thought you and your mom were joking about my stomach, but just look at me. Iโ€™m a balloon.โ€ She chuckled again as I felt a kick. Her face grew serious. โ€œI didnโ€™t realize how tired and sick Iโ€™d felt until I woke up today. I woke up rested, happy, and strong for the first time in months.โ€ She rubbed her stomach. โ€œYou saved us, and I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™ll ever be able to thank you enough. But my boys will know how much you did for us.โ€

I kissed her cheek. โ€œYou deserve to be happy.โ€ I stepped back. โ€œStay close and stay safe.โ€ She nodded once before Toya and I turned and left through the front door.
