Listen to this chapter:

Lynn was waiting with my mother outside. They both looked up as we left the house. She started to shake, but Toya and I pretended not to notice. โ€œReady to go?โ€ I called. My mom smiled and rubbed her shoulder. โ€œLynn wanted to ask a favor.โ€

I walked over and waited. โ€œOkayโ€ฆโ€

Lynn shuffled for a few seconds. โ€œI know this is just a band-aid, and it wonโ€™t help me process anything thatโ€™s happened.โ€ She was stalling, trying to explain herself.

โ€œJust ask,โ€ I said, tilting my head.

She met my eyes, and I saw panic. โ€œIโ€™m terrified to leave. So much so that my wolf is digging into me. She feels safe here, and we havenโ€™t felt safe since leaving our pack.โ€

That was a gut punch. I looked at my mom. โ€œFaked you.โ€

Lynn shook her head. โ€œNo, Amy, you didnโ€™t.โ€ She grabbed my hand. โ€œYou had things you had to do.โ€

I nodded. โ€œBut I should have kept a better eye on you and what was happening.โ€ I rubbed my thumb over her hand. โ€œI owe you.โ€ She shook her head. โ€œJust tell me what you need. Do you need to stay here? Done. I wonโ€™t make you leave.โ€

She shook her head more vigorously.

โ€œThen how can I help?โ€ I asked.

โ€œI want you to command me to not be afraid,โ€ she said, fighting back tears. My mom stepped closer and rubbed her back.

โ€œYou can do this,โ€ my mom said, her words seeming to bolster Lynn.

Lynn met my eyes again; the panic was still there, but something else, tooโ€”a hidden strength she probably didn't know she possessed. โ€œI want you to command me to not be afraid.โ€

I reeled back, as if slapped. โ€œWhat?โ€ My gaze snapped to my momโ€™s, but she was focused on Lynn. โ€œLynnโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBefore you say no, can you listen to my reasoning first?โ€ she rushed out. I nodded.

โ€œOf course.โ€

She shuddered, obviously worried Iโ€™d refuse before she could explain. โ€œIโ€™m terrified to leave,โ€ she began. โ€œBut I need to leave. I canโ€™t stay here for the rest of my life. I have a pack, a position, and a second chance out there. But mainlyโ€ฆI need to take back my strength. Derek needs to die, and I need to see it through. I wonโ€™t be able to move on without it. Heโ€™s become my boogeyman.โ€ Her face contorted in hatred. โ€œHe doesnโ€™t deserve that much power over anyone. Including me. He took a bond that was supposed to be sacred and turned it into torture.โ€ She looked lost, her mind reliving the trauma. I squeezed her hand, watching her eyes struggle to refocus on me. โ€œIf you take the fear away, then I can function. I can do my job. I can keep my rank and dignity in our pack. But most of all,โ€ she looked down, โ€œif you take the fear away, when I see Derek, I wonโ€™t be back in that dark room. He wonโ€™t have power over me anymore. And I will be able to kill him.โ€

โ€œYou can kill him now,โ€ Toya said softly, her unwavering support evident.

But Lynn shook her head. โ€œPhysically? Yes. I can.โ€ She seemed to gain strength from that admission. โ€œMentally? I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™m strong enough yet. But weโ€™ve run out of time.โ€ She lifted her hand. โ€œIโ€™m shaking this hard just thinking about leaving my room for a night. Being back in the pack terrifies me because if they see what Iโ€™ve become, theyโ€™ll shun me.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true,โ€ I whispered. โ€œAnd I think deep down you know that.โ€

Lynn sighed. โ€œIn my heart, I know youโ€™re right. Our pack is amazing, but in my mindโ€ฆโ€ She shook her head. โ€œIn my mind, in my wolfโ€™s mind, weโ€™re trapped, cornered. And sheโ€™s willing to kill anyone who comes too close.โ€ She met my eyes.

โ€œYouโ€™re afraid of yourself,โ€ I said, my words surprising even me, but Lynn nodded.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to hurt anyone just because they patted my back or walked too close at night.โ€ She stepped closer, tears streaming down her face. โ€œYou can remove the command after everything is done, and I swear Iโ€™ll go into seclusion until Iโ€™m healthy enough to be around the pack safely. But right now, we donโ€™t have an option.โ€

I looked between Lynn, Toya, and my mother. โ€œMom?โ€

She looked at Lynn. โ€œWhile Iโ€™ve raised you to not command a wolf unless necessary, there are always exceptions.โ€ She lifted a hand, and I watched Lynn tense. โ€œHer fear is doing her more harm than good.โ€ She turned to me.

I swallowed. โ€œLynn, I command you to not be afraid.โ€ The words felt heavy, but then her back straightened. The fear in her eyes vanished. And for the first time, Lynn smiled.
