Megan stared at me for a second before nodding. She ran to the clearing, and I heard the telltale sound of a vacuum. I shut my eyes, banging my head against the tree, whispering, โSo fucking stupid.โ Tears burned behind my eyes. I pushed up, whirled to face the tree, and punched it repeatedly, screaming my anger. โSo fucking stupid.โ Megan approached as I pummeled the tree. โAmy?โ
I continued hitting the tree. It never splintered, never broke, infuriating me further. โFUCK YOU!โ I punched harder, waiting for blood, for pain, but nothing came.
โIt wonโt,โ Megan called out.
I whirled. โWHAT?โ
โThe painโฆ it wonโt happen,โ Megan nodded toward the tree. โThat tree isnโt real, Amy.โ
โWhat the hell are you talking about?โ I dropped my hands. My chest heaved from attacking the tree.
Megan stared at me. โYouโre mad.โ She moved closer, her words disorienting me.
โOf course Iโm mad,โ I shook my head. โBut what does that have to do with anything?โ
โYour dad betrayed your trust. So did your mom.โ She changed the subject, confusing my anger-addled brain. โArenโt you?โ I screamed.
She tilted her head. โIs that all youโre mad at?โ
โYES!โ I screamed. โI trusted them, and they played me. Everyone played me.โ
She crept closer. โSo you attacked the tree?โ she asked, raising an eyebrow.
โSo?โ I whirled to face her. โWhy canโt I attack a tree?โ
โI never said you couldnโt, but the tree youโre attacking is a figment of our imagination. The pain, the blood youโre chasingโฆ the distraction you desperately craveโฆ you wonโt find it here.โ She closed the distance. โYou canโt hurt yourself. Attacking the tree wonโt do anything but give you a headache.โ My knees wobbled. โYou wonโt get the physical pain to distract you from the emotional pain youโre running from.โ She pressed against my side.
My voice dropped to a whisper. โItโs not fair.โ
โWhatโs not fair?โ She licked my hand, tickling me, but I was too numb to feel it.
โHe forced my mom to leave. He forced me to live without him for most of my life. He asked me to go into computer science. He told me to get close to Brandon.โ A tear escaped. โI talked you into getting close to him. I had to kiss him, hold his hand, I had to treat him like he mattered, even knowing he was your mate.โ I finally looked down at Megan. โAnd I did it because he was my father. I tortured you because he asked me to and made it seem important. But when everything happened between Rowan and meโฆ he pretended to care that Rowan broke my heart. He shattered me, and they helped pick up the pieces. My mom held me through my pain. But within a month, my dad introduced me to Thoth.โ My knees gave out. โHe said Thoth could help me.โ I laughed, a hollow sound. โBut it was just Rowan.โ
Megan pressed her face into my neck. โAnd thatโs bad?โ She pulled back, genuinely confused.
โI told him so much,โ I reached for her face. โThoth became my friend, my confidant. I told him everythingโฆโ Another tear fell. โI told him about my heat. I told him about Rowanโฆ my pain, my love, my hate. Everything.โ
She nodded. โAnd it turned out to be him.โ
A sob broke from my chest. โI feel betrayed.โ
โAs you should,โ Nix called back. โBut I donโt think thatโs why youโre this mad.โ
I sighed. โWhy then?โ
Nix was silent. โI think youโre so mad that Thoth turned out to be Rowan not because they lied, but because you fell in love with him. The letters shifted your perspective on Rowanโฆ but youโd fallen for Thoth, for the man he represented. He was your escape. A listening, non-judgmental ear. A friend who took the time to know you. Someone not forced on you by circumstance or bond. Someone who didnโt know you. Someone who didnโt care about our power or rank. Someone you thought cared about you. Not me, not Megan, just you.โ Another sob bubbled up. โMegan got her love, even if he was a bastard. And eventually, youโll find your mate. But Thoth was the one man who could have loved you for youโฆ and finding out he was Rowan stole that from you.โ
