Listen to this chapter:

Megan stared at me for a second before nodding. She ran to the clearing, and I heard the telltale sound of a vacuum. I shut my eyes, banging my head against the tree, whispering, โ€œSo fucking stupid.โ€ Tears burned behind my eyes. I pushed up, whirled to face the tree, and punched it repeatedly, screaming my anger. โ€œSo fucking stupid.โ€ Megan approached as I pummeled the tree. โ€œAmy?โ€

I continued hitting the tree. It never splintered, never broke, infuriating me further. โ€œFUCK YOU!โ€ I punched harder, waiting for blood, for pain, but nothing came.

โ€œIt wonโ€™t,โ€ Megan called out.

I whirled. โ€œWHAT?โ€

โ€œThe painโ€ฆ it wonโ€™t happen,โ€ Megan nodded toward the tree. โ€œThat tree isnโ€™t real, Amy.โ€

โ€œWhat the hell are you talking about?โ€ I dropped my hands. My chest heaved from attacking the tree.

Megan stared at me. โ€œYouโ€™re mad.โ€ She moved closer, her words disorienting me.

โ€œOf course Iโ€™m mad,โ€ I shook my head. โ€œBut what does that have to do with anything?โ€

โ€œYour dad betrayed your trust. So did your mom.โ€ She changed the subject, confusing my anger-addled brain. โ€œArenโ€™t you?โ€ I screamed.

She tilted her head. โ€œIs that all youโ€™re mad at?โ€

โ€œYES!โ€ I screamed. โ€œI trusted them, and they played me. Everyone played me.โ€

She crept closer. โ€œSo you attacked the tree?โ€ she asked, raising an eyebrow.

โ€œSo?โ€ I whirled to face her. โ€œWhy canโ€™t I attack a tree?โ€

โ€œI never said you couldnโ€™t, but the tree youโ€™re attacking is a figment of our imagination. The pain, the blood youโ€™re chasingโ€ฆ the distraction you desperately craveโ€ฆ you wonโ€™t find it here.โ€ She closed the distance. โ€œYou canโ€™t hurt yourself. Attacking the tree wonโ€™t do anything but give you a headache.โ€ My knees wobbled. โ€œYou wonโ€™t get the physical pain to distract you from the emotional pain youโ€™re running from.โ€ She pressed against my side.

My voice dropped to a whisper. โ€œItโ€™s not fair.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s not fair?โ€ She licked my hand, tickling me, but I was too numb to feel it.

โ€œHe forced my mom to leave. He forced me to live without him for most of my life. He asked me to go into computer science. He told me to get close to Brandon.โ€ A tear escaped. โ€œI talked you into getting close to him. I had to kiss him, hold his hand, I had to treat him like he mattered, even knowing he was your mate.โ€ I finally looked down at Megan. โ€œAnd I did it because he was my father. I tortured you because he asked me to and made it seem important. But when everything happened between Rowan and meโ€ฆ he pretended to care that Rowan broke my heart. He shattered me, and they helped pick up the pieces. My mom held me through my pain. But within a month, my dad introduced me to Thoth.โ€ My knees gave out. โ€œHe said Thoth could help me.โ€ I laughed, a hollow sound. โ€œBut it was just Rowan.โ€

Megan pressed her face into my neck. โ€œAnd thatโ€™s bad?โ€ She pulled back, genuinely confused.

โ€œI told him so much,โ€ I reached for her face. โ€œThoth became my friend, my confidant. I told him everythingโ€ฆโ€ Another tear fell. โ€œI told him about my heat. I told him about Rowanโ€ฆ my pain, my love, my hate. Everything.โ€

She nodded. โ€œAnd it turned out to be him.โ€

A sob broke from my chest. โ€œI feel betrayed.โ€

โ€œAs you should,โ€ Nix called back. โ€œBut I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s why youโ€™re this mad.โ€

I sighed. โ€œWhy then?โ€

Nix was silent. โ€œI think youโ€™re so mad that Thoth turned out to be Rowan not because they lied, but because you fell in love with him. The letters shifted your perspective on Rowanโ€ฆ but youโ€™d fallen for Thoth, for the man he represented. He was your escape. A listening, non-judgmental ear. A friend who took the time to know you. Someone not forced on you by circumstance or bond. Someone who didnโ€™t know you. Someone who didnโ€™t care about our power or rank. Someone you thought cared about you. Not me, not Megan, just you.โ€ Another sob bubbled up. โ€œMegan got her love, even if he was a bastard. And eventually, youโ€™ll find your mate. But Thoth was the one man who could have loved you for youโ€ฆ and finding out he was Rowan stole that from you.โ€
