Listen to this chapter:

We ran for hours, staying well away from the pack house and the dead caves. Nix and Megan kept me company as I processed my thoughts. Megan rested her head on my lap as I sat against the tree Iโ€™d attacked earlier. โ€œDo you think theyโ€™re still looking for us?โ€ she asked softly.

โ€œProbably not,โ€ Nix called back. โ€œI havenโ€™t heard anyone in a long time, and they probably figured we needed space.โ€

I shook my head. โ€œThey have to keep a low profile. No one can find out theyโ€™re still alive.โ€ I ran my fingers through Meganโ€™s fur.

She cocked her head, staring up at me with one eye. โ€œHow does no one know the pack is alive?โ€ She twisted, rising to her feet. โ€œIโ€™ve been thinking about thisโ€”I have no idea how no one has figured out the pack survived.โ€

Nix stopped. โ€œIโ€™ve never thought about it until now. But Meganโ€™s right. Youโ€™d think someone would have checked, right?โ€

I snorted. โ€œHubris.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Both my wolves sounded confused.

โ€œI canโ€™t be certain, but knowing the playersโ€ฆAurora, Verity, Vinceโ€ฆwithout ever meeting Garith, I can honestly say theyโ€™re all the same. Theyโ€™re cocky, full of themselves. Searching for a dead person is a waste of their time.โ€ I looked at Megan. โ€œSomeone saw my dad die, and they ran with it.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œThereโ€™s a ninety percent chance my dad is using magic to cover his tracks, but it boils down to them being too full of themselves to double-check if someone they think is dead, is really dead.โ€

Megan snorted. โ€œStupid.โ€

I nodded. โ€œBut it works in our favor.โ€ I sighed, pushing myself up from the ground.

Megan followed. โ€œAre you ready?โ€

I nodded. โ€œA few hours of self-pity is enough. Itโ€™s time to face the music.โ€

Nix chuckled. โ€œI doubt itโ€™s music waiting for you back home.โ€

I pushed forward. โ€œYouโ€™re probably right.โ€ I started running back to the pack house. โ€œBut if weโ€™re lucky, Rowan will be back at his castle, and I only have to deal with my father and Ronnie.โ€

Both my wolves growled. โ€œI understand not telling us the truth for a bit. But keeping all this hidden and then pushing us toward Rowan to, at the very least, forgive himโ€”thatโ€™s where I draw the line.โ€ Nix stalked toward the clearing.

I chuckled. โ€œYou two talk to his wolf.โ€ They both turned to me. โ€œDid you know?โ€ I thought I was joking, but as soon as the words left my lips, I knew I wasnโ€™t. Weโ€™d spent the last few years strengthening our bond, but theyโ€™d met Erubus behind my back. So maybe they knew.

โ€œI know youโ€™re hurting, but that hurt,โ€ Nix settled back on her haunches. โ€œI thought we were past questioning each other.โ€

โ€œThat was before she found out weโ€™d been talking to Erubus behind her back,โ€ Megan lay down on her stomach. โ€œAnd before she found out, Iโ€™d rejected Brandon in my first year of school without telling either of you.โ€

Nix looked between us before sighing and sinking to her stomach. โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll agree weโ€™ve done a few things that might make you question us.โ€ She laid her head on her paws. โ€œBut I can say with utmost sincerity that I had no idea. Erubus never told me anything about him being Thoth.โ€

Megan sighed, making my stomach clench. I stumbled as she turned to look at me. โ€œI donโ€™t know if youโ€™ll even trust my words, Amy.โ€ She looked down. โ€œI know I havenโ€™t been the most honest with you. But I swear, I didnโ€™t know. I would have told you if I did.โ€

Her words comforted me. โ€œI trust you both,โ€ I whispered. โ€œI just feel like if Ronnie, my mom, and dad knew, who else knew? Toya, Wendy? Cass?โ€

โ€œIf Cass knew, she would have called. We know that,โ€ Nix snorted. โ€œPlaying dead or not, we would have gotten a call. She wouldnโ€™t stand by and let that happen to you.โ€ Nixโ€™s words eased my anxiety.

โ€œI hope youโ€™re right.โ€ We ran the rest of the way in silence. By the time we reached the pack house, it was night. The house looked empty, not a light on. I shifted as I opened the door. Lights burned my eyes. โ€œWhat the fuck?โ€

โ€œMagic bitch,โ€ Cass jumped on me. โ€œI missed you so much.โ€ I pulled back and then dove into her arms.

โ€œI missed you too.โ€

She smirked. โ€œIโ€™ll have dinner delivered to your room. Go shower, then we talk.โ€ She rubbed her hands together.

โ€œOkay!โ€ I ran upstairs, excited to spend the night with my best friend. I showered quickly, wrapped myself in a towel, and returned to my bedroom, turning on the lights.

โ€œYouโ€™re going to need to put clothes on, rabbit.โ€
