Chapter 1131

Jack froze for a few seconds before agreeing. The two then left the research institute. A look of delight crossed Colbyโ€™s face as they departed. He'd been closely watching them ever since Jack arrived for Roxanne, and had noticed her struggle. Clearly, his morning words had been effective.

Meanwhile, Roxanne stopped at the institute entrance, a turmoil of emotions surging within her. Jack stopped behind her.

โ€œSorry,โ€ Roxanne said, having calmed herself. She realized she'd been overly reactive earlier.

Jack raised an eyebrow. โ€œWhat's the matter? Why the sudden apology? You haven't secretly sabotaged the project, have you, Ms. Jarvis?โ€

Roxanne shook her head vehemently. โ€œOf course not! I've invested too much in this project.โ€

Jack chuckled. โ€œI'm just joking. Still, I'm curious what prompted the apology.โ€

Roxanne lowered her gaze. โ€œMy attitude earlier wasnโ€™t good.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not a big deal. I donโ€™t mind your attitude as long as your research progresses.โ€ Jack subtly emphasized their professional relationship.

Roxanne felt even guiltier. She realized he was solely dedicated to the institute's success, and she'd been suspicious based on foolish gossip.

โ€œSo, Ms. Jarvis, was there something you wanted to tell me?โ€ Jack asked.

His question broke through her thoughts, leaving her speechless. She'd initially intended to suggest they maintain distance, but his previous words made that impossible.

When she remained silent, he raised a questioning eyebrow.

Finally, Roxanne quietly said, โ€œLet me thank you, Mr. Damaris, on behalf of the institute, for the medicinal herbs this morning.โ€

Jack paused, then a smile touched his lips. โ€œDid you bring me out here just to say that?โ€

Roxanne nodded guiltily, averting her gaze.

Jack paused before suggesting, โ€œSince youโ€™d like to thank me, Ms. Jarvis, perhaps you couldโ€ฆ thank me by making me some homemade food?โ€

Roxanneโ€™s lashes fluttered; she inhaled sharply. His earlier words had reassured her, but this request felt overly intimate.

Sensing her discomfort, he smiled and added, โ€œNo rush. If Iโ€™m going to eat your cooking, I want to try something youโ€™ve mastered. Prepare it when youโ€™re ready.โ€ He was giving her time to process his words.

Roxanneโ€™s head remained bowed, emotions swirling in her eyes. Yet, she couldn't refuse his request after expressing her gratitude. Moreover, its non-urgent nature gave him room to reconsider.

Roxanne finally agreed. โ€œOkay.โ€
