Chapter 1264
Glimpsing the grin on Lucianโs face, Roxanne was stunned. Crimson stained her cheeks. She recovered only after a moment, guiltily returning to her cooking. Lucian watched, arms crossed.
When she finished, he helped carry the dishes and set the table. Archie, Benny, and Estella were already seated. Dinner was warm and cozy. Afterward, Lucian sent the children to the living room and took Roxanne to his study.
โWhatโs the good news?โ she asked, utterly mystified.
Lucianโs expression grew solemn. โI think Iโve found the person who tampered with your experiment.โ
Anxiety etched Roxanneโs features. โWho was it?โ
Lucian hesitated. In the past, sheโd been reluctant to suspect Colby, their long-time colleague. He wondered if she could accept the truth. He even considered delaying the revelation until he had more concrete evidence.
โWas it Mr. Damaris?โ Roxanne finally guessed, receiving no immediate answer.
Lucianโs gaze darkened. โYouโre that worried about him?โ He noted her immediate thought of Damaris, despite their infrequent mention of him lately. Her incredulity was evident.
Exasperated, Roxanne explained, โItโs because youโve suspected him all along! Who else could it be?โ
Lucian frowned. โThat day, only the three of you were at the lab counter.โ He was guiding her suspicions toward Colby.
Roxanne understood. The shock of realizing who remainedโbesides herself and Jackโwas palpable. โYou mean it was Colby?โ
The thought was incomprehensible. Theyโd worked together for years. If he hated her, he would have acted sooner. Even if jealous of her project leadership, heโd had ample opportunities for sabotage. Why this time, and with such cruelty? She couldnโt understand.
Lucianโs heart ached at her expression. โAt present, heโs the prime suspect.โ
Roxanne clutched her shirt, clinging to hope. โIs there proof?โ
Lucian shook his head.
Relief washed over her. โIf thereโs no proof, perhaps you misunderstood. Didnโt you previously say it was Mr. Damarisโโ
Lucian interrupted. โThereโs no proof now, but I have a way to prove it was him, if youโre willing to cooperate.โ
Roxanne was taken aback. From anyone else, it would be a baseless accusation. But this was Lucian. His certainty was nearly absolute.
โI know you canโt accept it,โ Lucian said, his gaze unwavering, โbut I think youโre more interested in why he did it. Iโm certainly curious about his motive for trying to kill you!โ
