Chapter 1276
Sonya immediately called Lucian. He had just left Roxanne's house after dinner. Seeing his mother's name, his heart sank; the tenderness on his face vanished, replaced by a cold reserve.
"Where are you? Return to the Farwell main residence immediately! I have something to say!" Sonya's voice exploded before he could speak.
Lucian frowned, glancing back at Roxanne's brightly lit house. He could almost hear Archie and Benny playing. He replied somberly, "Got it. I'll be right there."
He suspected his mother's reason for calling: she'd learned about his broken engagement and would defend Aubree. This time, he wouldn't yield. He would remain firm and sever ties with Aubree.
He drove toward the Farwell main residence. Meanwhile, Aubree watched Sonya hang up, her face forlorn.
"Mrs. Farwell, you don't need to do this. Lucian has made his decision, and I respect it. I only came because I was heartbroken and needed to cry. You don't need to worry about me."
Sonya was both angry and distressed. "What are you saying? You're the only woman worthy to be the mistress of the Farwell family! When Lucian arrives, I'll teach him a lesson!"
Aubree sniffled, her head bowed, a fleeting ruthlessness flashing in her eyes. She knew her tactics were despicable, but their effectiveness justified their use. Lucian is mine, she thought, and no one will take him away!
Nearly an hour later, a car arrived at the mansion gates. Sonya's consolation vanished, replaced by rage. Aubree sat beside her, head bowed in feigned guilt.
Lucian entered. Sonya's eyes blazed with accusation.
"Where were you?" she demanded.
"Is that really necessary?" Lucian replied calmly. The trip from either the Farwell residence or the Farwell Group wouldn't have taken long.
He knew Aubree was there, and that his mother had learned about his decision to end the engagement and his relationship with Roxanne. This was merely a pretext for her outburst.
The contrast between his composure and Aubree's sobs enraged Sonya.
"What kind of attitude is this? How dare you cancel the engagement with the Pearson family without telling your father or me to be with Roxanne? Who gave you permission?" She slammed her cup onto the coffee table, her composure shattered.
Aubree flinched, then resumed her sobbing.
Lucian remained unmoved. "I'm the one with the marriage agreement. Why would I need your approval to cancel it?" He scowled at his mother. "Furthermore, Father has never interfered. This has been your doing alone! There's no need to involve him. Even if he were here, my stance wouldn't change!"
