Chapter 1278

Lucian found it ironic that Sonya and Aubree both trusted and doubted each other.

"Aubree isn't suitable to be Essie's mother," he stated. "I've given her six years, allowed her recent care of Essie, yet Essie remains unwilling to accept her. Essie's condition is even recurring. I won't risk her well-being."

Sonya, frowning, looked at Aubree. She knew nothing of Estella's condition, having believed Aubree and Essie were getting along well. Even so, she'd never accept Roxanne, Estella's abandoning mother.

"Aubree just needs time," Sonya insisted. "Give her more time; she'll resolve it!"

Lucian's impatience flared. "If I allow her continued interaction with Essie, her condition will worsen."

Sonya's voice faltered. "How would you know without trying? Isn't she better than Roxanne, who abandoned Essie?"

Lucian refused further argument. "No, she isn't."

He turned to leave, adding, "My engagement decision is final. Next time, state your reason for calling. If it's about this, don't bother."

Sonya, enraged, shouted, "Stop!" but Lucian didn't hesitate.

Aubree's heart sank. Knowing this meant the end of their engagement, she ran to Lucian, hugging him from behind. "You can't do this! I've waited six years! How much longer must I wait?"

Lucian looked at her hands on his waist, repulsion evident. "I never asked you to wait. It was your wishful thinking." He'd tried ending the engagement countless times, but she'd made excuses. Now, the charade was over. He coldly pried her fingers from his waist, warning, "I'm furious you sought out Roxanne. Stop hounding her."

Aubree struggled, but he was stronger. Pain shot through her fingers as he shoved her back, causing her to fall. He left without a glance.

"Lucian!" Aubree cried, watching his retreating figure.

He ignored her, entering his car. Aubree wailed. Sonya, witnessing this hysterical display from the woman she'd considered a friend, hesitated before helping Aubree to her feet.
