Chapter 1308
The boys were elated at the prospect of going to Lucian's place. They assumed their father was worried about their mother and wanted to care for her there. But why didn't he want Mommy to go? If he was truly worried, wouldn't it be easier for him to come here? They emerged from Roxanne's bedroom, puzzled by the arrangement.
Before they could reach a conclusion, Cayden knocked on their door. Roxanne, prepared, went to answer it.
โMs. Jarvis, Mr. Farwell requests that I take you and the children to the manor,โ Cayden announced politely.
Roxanne nodded. โI know. He called me. The children will be down shortly; please bear with us.โ
As she spoke, the boys ran downstairs. Cayden ushered them all into the car.
During the drive, Roxanne asked, โDo you know why Lucian called us?โ
Cayden hesitated, then shook his head. โYouโll find out when we arrive.โ He knew the reason but felt it inappropriate to discuss it before his employer.
Roxanne frowned, her curiosity growing. Cayden's obvious reticence struck her as odd. The more secretive he was, the stranger it seemed. Archie and Benny, too, were unsettled by the mysterious atmosphere.
Twenty minutes later, the car stopped before the Farwell residence. Cayden led them inside, where Lucian awaited in the living room. Behind him stood a man of exquisite features but unremarkable build, who appeared ill at ease.
At the sight of Roxanne, the man greeted her sincerely, โHow do you do, Ms. Jarvis?โ Roxanne felt, perhaps imaginatively, that he needed her help.
She looked at Lucian questioningly. โWho is this?โ
The moment their eyes met, Roxanne was again stunned by the conflicted expression on Lucian's face.
โWhat happened? Why are youโโ She began to ask, but Lucian interrupted.
โThis is Cory Zaythrone. Heโs a private investigator.โ
Roxanne remained puzzled. Sheโd never heard the name, yet the man clearly knew her.
Sensing her confusion, Lucian explained, โHeโs been watching you.โ
The revelation shocked Roxanne. She looked at Zaythrone, a sudden chill running down her spine. Someone had been following her, and she'd been completely unaware! Why? What had he done while tailing her?
Roxanne wanted to question him further, but a small figure ran downstairs. โAunt Roxanne! Archie! Benny!โ
Estella, having awakened and searched for her father, was delighted to find Roxanne and the boys. She skipped towards them.
Roxanne suppressed her questions, smiling at Estella.
โAunt Roxanne, are you feeling better? What brings you here?โ Estella asked, concerned, and tiptoed to feel Roxanne's forehead.
Roxanne leaned forward. โThe feverโs gone.โ
Estella relaxed only after checking herself.
Meanwhile, watching Roxanne interact warmly with the children, Lucian seethed, remembering what heโd learned that afternoon. If not for Aubree, things would have been different long ago.
