Chapter 1366
Linda arrived on time the following morning, just as Roxanne was leading the children downstairs for breakfast. โMs. Linda!โ Archie and Benny greeted her warmly. Linda had babysat them before, during Roxanne's work trips abroad. To the children, she was like a godmother, much like Madilyn. Linda responded with equal warmth, โLong time no see, my darlings!โ After hugging Archie and Benny, she turned to Estella, who stood shyly behind them. Estella was still somewhat wary of strangers.
โYou must be Essie!โ Linda offered her hand politely, smiling gently. โHow do you do? Iโm Linda, your mommyโs assistant, and Iโll be caring for you for the next few days.โ Estella looked to her mother and brothers for guidance. With their encouragement, she slowly offered her hand and shook Lindaโs. Understanding the little girlโs hesitation, Linda didnโt press her for conversation, releasing her hand and turning to Roxanne.
โHow are things at the research institute?โ Roxanne asked, concerned. She had rushed to prepare for a medical consultation after the recent online discussion subsided, and remembered to ask Linda in person.
Linda smiled. โItโs almost resolved. Those suppliers who wanted to terminate their contracts have had a change of heart and are asking to become partners again. What do you think?โ
Roxanne was silent for a moment. โThen keep the partnerships. Those suppliers are opportunistic parasites; we shouldn't hold them to high standards.โ Their earlier threats to terminate contracts stemmed from their involvement in the online discussion, which jeopardized their interests. Since there were no private dealings, Roxanne saw no reason to seek further assurances of their loyalty.
Linda wasnโt surprised by Roxanneโs response and readily agreed. โIโm not sure how long Iโll be away. Iโll need to trouble you to look after the research institute and the children during my absence.โ Roxanne sounded apologetic.
Linda shook her head. โItโs my job. Besides, Iโm fond of them. Theyโre good children.โ Archie and Benny nodded in agreement; they were well-behaved in Lindaโs presence.
Roxanne smiled, caressing their heads. โBe good, behave yourselves while Iโm away, and donโt give her any trouble. Understand?โ
โYes, Mommy,โ the children replied sweetly.
After giving Linda and the children further instructions, Roxanne checked her watch. โIโm leaving. Be good, all of you.โ Dragging her suitcase, she turned to go.
Seeing his mother leave, Benny felt anxious about his fatherโs continued absence. โMommy!โ he called out in a sudden burst of inspiration.
She stopped, puzzled. โWhat is it?โ
Benny looked at his brother and sister; Estella remained silent. After a moment, he said, โYou left us with so many words, but do you have any for Mr. Farwell? We can pass the message!โ Roxanneโs brow furrowed slightly; his words brought a realization to her.
