Chapter 1388
Just then, a pot-bellied middle-aged man approached the pair. "Who's this with you, Mr. Damaris?"
Jack stood to greet the man and introduce them. "This is Dr. Roxanne Jarvis. Roxanne, meet Terence Canfield, the new administrator of this nursing home."
Roxanne smiled and greeted Terence cordially.
"So, this is the renowned Dr. Jarvis?" Terence exclaimed, appraising her. "People have praised your beauty and talent, but I never imagined you'd be this stunning! And to top it off, you have a heart of gold! The residents speak highly of you."
"I'm nowhere near as kind as you, Mr. Canfield," Roxanne replied, smiling. "If you hadn't taken over the nursing home, who knows what would have become of these elderly residents?"
Terence chuckled politely. "Oh, it's nothing to speak of. It's getting late. Do you have any plans this evening? If not, perhaps you'd join me for dinner? It would be a good opportunity for me to thank you on behalf of our residents."
Roxanne frowned, about to decline, when Jack interjected.
"Sounds good! Besides, I wanted to ask you about the residents' follow-up treatments," he said, turning to Roxanne. "I'm not sure if Ms. Jarvis has other plans. If she does, I'd need to arrange transportation for her, Mr. Canfield."
Roxanne, also concerned about the follow-up care and not wanting to inconvenience Terence, agreed.
"Let's have dinner, then. I'd like to learn more about the follow-up treatments as well."
Terence led them to a nearby restaurant. A server promptly ushered them into a private room and served their meal.
"Here's to you, Mr. Damaris and Dr. Jarvis!" Terence said, raising his glass. "You've seen the nursing home's condition. We offer financial support, but no medical organizations will collaborate with us. They cite our high mortality rate, fearing reputational damage. You two were the only ones who immediately agreed to provide medical consultation!"
Roxanne and Jack exchanged glances and stood.
"We're simply doing our jobs," Jack replied pleasantly. "You, however, deserve praise for your generosity. The nursing home is in disrepair, yet you took it over. We have the utmost respect for you."
Roxanne nodded. "Indeed. Without your support, we wouldn't have had this opportunity."
The three shared an enthusiastic and comfortable conversation about the nursing home's future. Terence, accustomed to business entertaining, continuously offered Jack and Roxanne drinks.
Unwilling to refuse his hospitality, they accepted, and Roxanne began to feel the effects of the alcohol.
Midway through dinner, several family members arrived with gifts, prompting more speeches and toasts. Many had sent their elderly parents to the home due to the high cost of medical care. Their gratitude for Roxanne and Jack's free services was immense.
Roxanne, unable to refuse their heartfelt expressions, lost count of her wine glasses. She felt her head grow heavy and her movements sluggish.
