Chapter 1390
Lucian offered no denial to Jack's words, his expression as hostile as ever. Roxanne, seemingly uncomfortable with Lucian's close hold, whined and struggled slightly. Sensing her discomfort, he loosened his grip and patted her shoulder to soothe her. Jack's displeasure intensified at this intimate exchange.
"Ms. Jarvis and I simply shared some wine with the patients' families. We treated the elders, and their families were enthusiastic in expressing their gratitude. I was planning to drive Ms. Jarvis home, as she's had a bit to drink," Jack explained, though the underlying meaning was clear to any discerning observer. He was subtly asserting his connection to Roxanneโtheir shared work, shared gratitudeโall independent of Lucian.
Lucian understood the implication immediately. His face hardening, he retorted, "Thanks for the reminder, Mr. Damaris. I'll ensure Roxanne drinks less at future gatherings." He then added, "It's late. I'll take Roxanne back to the hotel for some rest. There are many things in my car, and I don't wish to cause you any discomfort in a cramped space. Please wait for your driver, Mr. Damaris."
With that, Lucian turned and left with Roxanne. Jack's rage simmered. "Mr. Farwell, are you backtracking? I recall you treating your ex-wife coldly six years ago. You seemed to dislike her intensely," he taunted.
Pausing, Lucian admitted, "I was out of my mind six years ago and caused Roxanne suffering. But now, I know my feelings. Roxanne is mine. Mr. Damaris, I suggest you cease your futile efforts."
Jack sneered, "If I recall correctly, your engagement with your previous fiancรฉe ended recently. Now you're claiming Roxanne? How absurd!" The sarcasm was transparent; Jack intended to steal Roxanne from Lucian.
Lucian turned, glancing at Jack. "So what? Roxanne is my daughter's mother. That alone renders our relationship impenetrable to outsiders."
As Lucian spoke, he felt a weight against his body. Lowering his head, he saw Roxanne asleep in his arms, leaning against his chest, appearing fragile and about to collapse. His expression softened as he gazed at her sleeping face, then gently lifted her.
In her sleep, Roxanne inhaled a familiar scent that comforted her. She instinctively leaned into Lucian, her hand resting on his chest, clutching his shirt. Even as Roxanne wrinkled his designer shirt, Lucian smiled indulgently and carried her downstairs.
Under the influence of alcohol, Jack's anger intensified as he watched them leave. His eyes blazed with rage, his fists clenched tight. So what if they have a child?
Having spent the day with Roxanne and witnessed her exceptional medical knowledge, Jack remained determined to win her over. She was uniquely qualified to collaborate with him on medical research, building their own medical empire. I still have a chance, as long as Lucian and Roxanne don't remarry. I will make Roxanne mine!
