Chapter 1396

Roxanne endured the pain in her waist as she finished her shower. Putting on her clothes and leaving the bathroom, she saw Lucian in the corridor. "I'm done," she announced.

Lucian approached and abruptly reached for her. Confused, she followed his hand to her collar; he was lifting it. Realizing his intent, she quickly averted her gaze. "I have to go for a medical consultation, so I'll be leaving now," she said, lowering her head and walking past him.

Knowing her thoughts were still unsettled, Lucian remained silent, letting her compose herself. After watching her leave, he returned to his room.

Roxanne's concern about the medical consultation stemmed from worry for the nursing home residents, not guilt. Glancing at the clock, she saw it was almost eight o'clock. They had arrived at the nursing home by this time yesterday, yet Jack hadn't appeared. Perplexed, she knocked on his door, but received no reply despite repeated knocks.

Just as she was about to call him, a cleaner emerged from the next room. "The person in that room has already checked out," she informed Roxanne helpfully.

Roxanne was bewildered. "When? I thought we were going to the medical consultation together today. We even had dinner last night."

"After he came back last night," the cleaner replied.

Thanking the cleaner, Roxanne felt uneasy. Jack had seemed fine at dinner. Why had he returned last night only to check out? If she remembered correctly, he was to escort her back yesterday; he should have been preparing to leave with her.

The more she considered it, the stranger the situation became. Perhaps something had happened after she'd been drunk. She returned to Lucian to find out what had transpired.

After two knocks, Lucian opened the door, staring at her. "What's the matter? Aren't you in a hurry for the medical consultation?"

Roxanne carefully observed his expression. "Did something happen after I got drunk last night?"

He scrutinized her intently, as if asking, Don't you already know?

Embarrassed and angry, she furrowed her brow. "What I'm asking is if there was a conflict between you and Mr. Damaris. He checked out of his room last night." The only explanation she could conceive was a dispute between Lucian and Jack when Lucian had picked her up.

Lucian's eyes turned cold. He disliked her questioning him about another man so soon after she'd left his bed. "You think I chased him away?" His expression hardened as he recalled last night's events. "I didn't do anything. But even if I had, I would have been justified, given what he said."

Noticing his change in demeanor, Roxanne explained, "That's not what I meant. I'm just curious why Mr. Damaris suddenly checked out. We have a medical consultation today, and he's in charge. He shouldn't have left without a word."
