Chapter 1397
Roxanne wasn't sure what was happening, but she desperately wanted to avoid being misunderstood by Lucian, particularly concerning her relationship with Jack. After finishing her explanation, she observed his expression intently. Her words calmed him, softening his frigid demeanor.
"He acted normally last night, and we had no disagreements. I don't know why he suddenly checked out," he said, as if their previous dispute never occurred.
Fearing a misinterpretation, Roxanne refrained from further contemplation and simply nodded. "Then I'll call him."
Lucian's eyes darkened; he felt a strong urge to stop her. However, he remained silent, believing magnanimity was appropriate given her voluntary explanation.
After saying goodbye, she returned to her room and called Jack. He answered after a delay. "What's the matter, Ms. Jarvis?"
Frowning, Roxanne stated, "The cleaner said you checked out last night."
"Mhm," Jack replied, assuming she was curious about his departure. To his surprise, she asked, "What about today's medical consultation? Are you still going?"
His gaze darkened slightly. Despite his displeasure, his voice remained gentle. "I won't be going. We spent the past two days examining severely ill patients; only relatively healthy ones remain. You can have the other doctors see them. I'll come if there are problems."
He sighed. "Also, I was quite tired yesterday, so I wanted to rest today."
He subtly hinted at her to inquire about the previous night's events. However, she missed his intent, replying, "Then you should rest well, Mr. Damaris. Don't worry, I can go to the nursing home if any problems arise."
Jack frowned, displeased. "Thank you, Ms. Jarvis."
Unaware of the shift in his tone, she smiled. "It's my job."
"Oh, yes, I recently decided to develop a new medicine, which may require collaboration with your research institute. I look forward to working with you when the time comes, Ms. Jarvis."
She readily agreed. "Sure! Oh, I almost forgot. How are you feeling now? I remember you drank a lot last night. Do you feel unwell?"
Jack asked pointedly, "I was planning to send you back first, but Mr. Farwell insisted on doing it instead. Did he take good care of you?"
"Yes, he did." She answered calmly and briefly, unwilling to elaborate.
He scowled at her terse response. Something must have happened last night! Why else would she be so reluctant to speak further?
"You should rest if you're tired, Mr. Damaris. I won't bother you anymore," Roxanne said casually.
Knowing he shouldn't prolong the conversation, Jack replied in a low voice and waited for her to hang up.
Immediately after the call ended, he glowered. If he was right, her attitude toward Lucian had softened! If he continued waiting, their remarriage was only a matter of time! He needed to act.
