Chapter 1517

It was past eight when Roxanne arrived home. Finding the three children seated on the couch, engrossed in the financial news channel, Lucian sat cross-legged beside them. All four were riveted to the television.

"You're back?" Lucian was the first to rise at the sound of the door. "Dinner's on the table. I just reheated it. You should change and join us."

Only then did the children look up, rushing towards her with full bellies. "Mommy, Daddy's food is delicious!"

Roxanne's amusement at their satiated state quickly shifted to the CEO, who seemed to be seeking acknowledgment.

"What did youโ€”"

"I didn't want to worry you. You should know I can take good care of them."

Roxanne was startled. Lucian's seriousness made her heart skip a beat. "I know. That's why I asked you to look after them."

The children, sensing a shift in the atmosphere, quietly backed away. Roxanne regained her composure, lowered her head, and walked past Lucian, who didn't stop her.

Tired after dinner, Roxanne suggested Lucian take the children home. "It's getting late. You should take them to the manor."

The children stared at them in confusion. Roxanne patiently explained to Archie and Benny, "I'm very busy these days, and I'm afraid I won't be able to give you the attention you need. Perhaps you could stay at Essie's for a while?"

"No! We want to be with you, Mommy!" Archie protested, his determination evident. "We want to protect you!"

Touched, Roxanne smiled and ruffled his hair.

"I have bodyguards, and I'm an adult. I can take care of myself. Having you three here will only distract and worry me. You don't want me exhausted, do you?"

The children, reluctantly, agreed.

Lucian helped the children into the car, then turned to Roxanne. "Will you be alright on your own?"

Roxanne smiled. "Don't I still have the bodyguards you assigned? And Aubree won't be around for a few days. I don't think it will be dangerous."

"There are plenty of guest rooms at the manor," Lucian hinted.

Roxanne understood, but still had reservations. She shook her head. "It's fine. It's closer to the research institute from here."

Quickly changing the subject to prevent further persuasion, she said, "It's late. The children have kindergarten tomorrow. You should hurry and get them home."

Knowing persuasion was futile, Lucian remained silent. He would take the children home and find another way to change her mind. He reminded her to rest before getting into the car.

"Bye, Mommy," the children called from the car window, their goodbyes reluctant.

Roxanne smiled and waved as they drove away.

Later, Lucian looked at the children in the rearview mirror. "Do you want Mommy to come with us?"

Their eyes lit up, and they nodded eagerly.

"I'd like that too, but that will depend on your behavior." Lucian's eyebrows rose in satisfaction.
