Chapter 1673: Searched the Library
Following Madilyn's departure, pin-drop silence filled the ward. Lucian dragged a chair to Roxanne's bedside and took her hand, a tender look on his face.
โDonโt worry, Roxanne. Everyoneโs thinking of ways to save you. Even Old Mr. Lomax is here, reviewing references with Jonathan. I believe heโll find a solution. I think youโd want to meet him,โ Lucian said patiently, though she couldn't hear him. โI also know about Archie and Bennyโs parentage now. Iโm sorry I didnโt realize they were my children sooner. Iโm grateful I didnโt treat them with prejudice. Youโve raised them well. On the other hand, I failed to care for our daughter properly. Because of me, our three children grew up in an incomplete family. Now that I know the truth, I only want to compensate you all, but that can only happen if you wake up. Youโll fight this for the kids, wonโt you?โ
Gently rubbing her hand, he tightened his grip unconsciously, falling silent for a moment before adding, โIf the doctors havenโt found a solution in three days, Iโll have to agree to Jackโs request. Heโll undoubtedly force me to marry another woman. I hope that when you regain consciousnessโฆโ He paused, sighing. โWhen you wake up and wish to hate me, you can. It was my fault for failing to protect you, so this burden is mine to bear.โ
Roxanne remained unresponsive. Lucianโs heart ached too deeply for him to continue. He sat beside her bed, gazing at her in silence.
Another sleepless night followed.
The next morning, Lucian left the ward before the doctors arrived. Watching them from the corridor, he contacted Jonathan. Heโd lost contact with Peregrine after his last hospital visit and wondered if heโd developed any treatment plans.
Jonathan answered after a while.
โWhatโs wrong, Lucian? Did Roxanneโs condition worsen?โ Jonathan whispered, clearly hiding somewhere.
Lucian frowned. โAre you still reviewing references?โ
Jonathan nodded. โWe worked all night and searched almost every medical book in the library, butโฆโ
At the thought of the outcome, Jonathan hesitated. They'd reviewed countless references, yet Old Mr. Lomax remained clueless about how to treat Roxanne. He couldn't bring himself to tell Lucian.
Lucian, sensing the lack of progress, didnโt press further. โHelp me thank and care for Old Mr. Lomax. Iโll thank him again personally tomorrow.โ Old Mr. Lomaxโs willingness to stay up all night, at his advanced age, was deeply moving.
Jonathan sighed silently, then comforted Lucian, โThereโs another day. Weโll find a way. Donโt worry.โ
Lucian grunted and immediately ended the call, preventing Jonathan from saying more. Jonathan stared at his dimming phone screen, then at Peregrine, who was reviewing medical texts. He felt disheartened.
Despite his earlier reassurance to Lucian, he couldn't ignore the grim reality. The chances of saving Roxanne with their limited resources were slim.
