Chapter 1674: Business Trip
The doctors emerged from the ward, their faces pale. None dared meet Lucian's gaze.
"How is she?" Lucian asked Madilyn, who stood beside him, momentarily dazed. A grimace twisted her features. "Roxanne…"
Despite various treatments to soften her blood vessels, the effects were negligible. Roxanne looked unwell. Madilyn silently bolstered her own and Roxanne's spirits, clinging to the hope of survival, a hope she couldn't share with Lucian. His ashen face suggested another sleepless night, despite his claim of a nap.
Hesitantly, she remained silent. Lucian gazed at her intently, then stated firmly, "That's all right. I won't let anything bad happen to her." He turned to Roxanne in the ward. Madilyn understood his resolve, but couldn't bring herself to dissuade him. Roxanne's survival superseded all else.
They entered the ward, their spirits heavy at the sight of Roxanne's closed eyes. Then, her phone rang. Madilyn saw Benny's name on the caller ID. Tears welled in her eyes; the pain was overwhelming, and she couldn't answer.
Before the call could end, Lucian reached for the phone. Madilyn's confusion was evident. How would he explain this to the children?
"Mommy!" The children's joyous voices filled the room. They had called repeatedly for days without answer, and their excitement was palpable.
Lucian swallowed, his eyes reddening slightly. He composed himself, then said calmly, "It's me. Your mommy is still occupied with work."
Puzzlement colored their responses. "Daddy? Isn't Mommy on a business trip? Is she back?"
Lucian cleared his throat. "She's not back yet. I traveled here to assist her with work issues."
Disappointment laced their voices. "We want to see Mommy too!"
"You can't come here. The environment is harsh; you might get sick, and Mommy wouldn't have time to care for you."
Understandingly, they agreed. "All right. Can you give Mommy the phone?"
The children's voices, amplified by the quiet ward, reached Madilyn. Seeing Roxanne, she burst into tears, quickly leaving the room to hide her sobs.
