Chapter 1676: Giving Up on Himself

They both waited hopefully until the afternoon. By three o'clock, however, no one had found a way to save Roxanne. Madilyn felt a wave of anxiety, a profound sense of helplessness washing over her. Her gaze kept drifting to Lucian; she wanted to ask him what they should do.

Lucian remained impassive, his face as cold as ice. Seeing his reaction, Madilyn blurted out, "Mr. Farwell, are we still waiting? Should we call Old Mr. Lomax?"

Lucian met her gaze. "I need to leave," he said firmly. "Take care of Roxanne. I'm not sure when I'll be back."

"Where are you going at this hour?" Madilyn asked anxiously.

Lucian's gaze fell on Roxanne, lying silently in bed. A flash of determinationโ€”then goneโ€”crossed his eyes. "I'm going to Jack."

Madilyn stared incredulously. "What? Are you seriously going to...?" She trailed off, clenching her jaw. She desperately wanted to stop him, but his intimidating presence held her back. She simply gave him a look of disapproval. "There is still time. Let's wait instead of giving in to Jack now!"

Lucian ignored her and turned to leave. "I can't wait any longer. It's too risky, and I can't bear the thought of endangering Roxanne's life."

Madilyn opened her mouth to speak, but the words wouldn't come. She knew she would do the same in his place. They couldn't risk Roxanne's life.

Lucian strode from the ward, his face expressionless. He passed a group of specialists, sparking immediate curiosity.

"Is Mr. Farwell giving up on Dr. Jarvis? Her condition is deteriorating, but he doesn't seem anxious at all," one whispered.

"I don't think so," another replied. "We saw how distressed he's been. He even called Old Mr. Lomax. Why would he give up now?"

As the elevator doors closed, the whispers grew louder. Hearing the commotion, Madilyn marched out and gave them a sharp look. "Everyone, if you're free, I suggest you get back to workโ€”trying to save Roxanne instead of gossiping!"

She knew better than anyone that Lucian had never considered giving up on Roxanne. He was giving up on himself. The specialists, while determined to treat Roxanne, readily returned to their work after Madilyn's reprimand.

Madilyn watched the elevator descend, then turned to Roxanne, whose obliviousness only heightened Madilyn's internal agony.

In the parking lot, Lucian sat in his car for a long time, the engine untouched. He'd thought he could accept reality as long as Roxanne survived. Even now, on the brink of losing her, his selfish desires lingered. Was accepting Jack's conditions the only way out?

After nearly half an hour, with no update, he finally called Jack.
