Chapter 1683: Does Essie Know?

Elektra was unsure how to respond to Lucian's adamant proposal of marriage. Sonya, entering from the kitchen after making coffee, was astonished by his declaration. She'd assumed his words were a furious outburst, expecting a change of heart upon seeing Elektra. Instead, he was surprisingly straightforward.

"Lucian, are you facing difficulties? Why would you suddenly ask me to marry you?" Elektra questioned, suspecting something unforeseen was forcing his hand.

Sonya, hearing Elektra's query, exchanged a confused look with Lucian. She'd already posed the same question without receiving an answer. Now, even Elektra suspected foul play. Would Lucian reveal the truth?

Waiting near the kitchen entrance, hoping to eavesdrop, Sonya was surprised when Lucian turned and met her gaze. She composed herself, nonchalantly serving them drinks. "I made coffee for you both. Enjoy it while you talk," she said, seating herself beside them.

"Please give us some privacy. I need to speak privately with Ms. Lane," Lucian stated firmly.

Sonya's expression hardened. "What do you want to talk about? Why hide it from me?" Her displeasure was evident, but Lucian remained uncommunicative. Tension filled the room.

Sensing this, Elektra quickly interjected, "Mrs. Farwell, I suddenly feel like eating your finger food. Would you mind making some for me?"

Sonya relented, saying, "Carry on, then. I'll make some finger food." She reluctantly returned to the kitchen.

Despite her efforts to listen, Sonya couldn't overhear their conversation. After half an hour, unable to bear the suspense, she checked on them, only to find them rising and seemingly departing.

"What's the matter?" Sonya asked, confused.

"Mrs. Farwell, I'm sorry, but I'm in a rush. I won't be able to eat the finger food today. Please save some for me, and I'll come another day," Elektra explained, smiling.

Sonya eyed Lucian suspiciously. He replied flatly, "I'm taking her to City Hall to obtain our marriage certificate. I've already contacted them, and they'll wait half an hour." He gestured to Elektra to hurry.

Though their conversation remained private, Elektra appeared composed, even cooperatively gathering her purse and hurrying towards Lucian. They left together.

Sonya, though happy to see her son seemingly fulfilling her wish of marrying, found the situation odd. "Why the rush? Does Essie know about this?" she called after them.

Without turning, Lucian replied, "I'll tell her after I collect the marriage certificate."
