Chapter 1687: If We Delay Any Longer

After leaving the Damaris residence, Lucian immediately took Elektra to the hospital, foregoing the trip home. Observing his worried expression in the rearview mirror, she sighed inwardly. Sonya's words proved true; his love for Roxanne was profound. This realization only intensified her curiosity about the woman who inspired such devotion. Even the late-night hospital trip elicited no complaint from Elektra.

Only upon arriving did Lucian remember forgetting to send Elektra home. The past few days had been a whirlwind. He apologized, "I'm sorry for troubling you to come for the marriage certificate and then bringing you here. If you don't mind waiting, I'll send my assistant to take you home."

Elektra chuckled, unconcerned. Looking toward the hospital, she replied lightly, "No. I want to see the woman who inspires such deep care." She smiled at Lucian. "You don't mind, do you?"

Their gazes met. He softened at the mention of Roxanne, piquing her curiosity further.

"Part of obtaining the antidote was thanks to you," Lucian explained in a low voice. "You played a part in saving Roxanne. She should thank you personally."

Elektra teased, "Really? Aren't you afraid she'll be jealous waking up to find you with another woman? No woman could bear that." The thought of waking to find her beloved with a stranger was overwhelming, especially considering Roxanne's situation.

Lucian smiled calmly. "Roxanne isn't like that. Since you wish to meet her, come in with me." He turned and led the way.

Surprised, but spurred by his earlier words, Elektra followed.

Exiting the elevator, they found Madilyn silently weeping outside Roxanne's ward. She had been tirelessly working to revive Roxanne, but their efforts had failed; Roxanne's condition had worsened. Dawn approached, yet progress remained elusive. Overwhelmed, Madilyn had retreated to the corridor.

Seeing Lucian, she cried out, grabbing his arm. "Mr. Farwell, how did it go? Is there a way to save Roxanne? There's no time! If we delay any longerโ€ฆ" Her unspoken fearโ€”that the only way to save Roxanne was through a compromise she couldn't bearโ€”hung heavy in the air.

Lucian's gaze softened with concern at her tear-stained face. "What happened? Did her condition worsen?" He could think of no other reason for her distress.
