Chapter 1691: Is This Antidote Real?
“That’s not it! You’ve misunderstood!” Elektra said hurriedly.
Madilyn smiled wryly. “Jack would never hand over the antidote unless you complied. It’s fine. I won’t blame you. It’s the only way to save Roxanne. I merely feel sorry for her.” My best friend was first poisoned and subjected to physical agony; upon waking, she must also face the pain of losing her lover.
Noticing the doctor’s unhappiness, Elektra anxiously wanted to explain but hesitated, instead looking to Lucian for guidance.
Taking over, Lucian said quietly, “This was merely a ruse we played on Jack. It’s all fake. This is Elektra Lane, a childhood friend. She went abroad with her family to build their business for a few years and only returned two days ago. I simply asked her to help me act.”
Elektra nodded.
Madilyn struggled to comprehend. “What do you mean, fake? But isn’t this a marriage certificate?” How could it be fake if even the certificate is complete?
Elektra chuckled. “This isn’t a legitimate document.” She then tore up the certificate before Madilyn.
Stunned, Madilyn watched the certificate being ripped to shreds, slowly beginning to believe them. She gave Elektra a grateful look. “Thank you. If it weren’t for you, Roxanne might have…”
“It’s not a big deal. It’s just a fake marriage, and I have nothing to lose. All is well as long as she wakes up,” Elektra replied with a grin.
Reassured by the revelation of the fake marriage, Madilyn’s only remaining worry was Roxanne’s awakening.
Time passed. Increasingly worried, the three realized more than two hours had elapsed.
“Why is she still unconscious?” Lucian asked Madilyn, turning to her as the most experienced doctor present.
Madilyn looked slightly perplexed. “I… don’t know either.”
Anger and unease welled up within Lucian. “Is this antidote real? How can you be sure?” The thought that Jack might have given him a fake antidote, intending to see him suffer, enraged him. He longed to confront Jack immediately for answers.
Seeing his anger, Madilyn frowned. “I don’t think it’s fake. As you witnessed, Roxanne’s symptoms did subside after she took the antidote. It probably just takes time to fully take effect. Let’s wait a little longer.”
Elektra added, “Judging by Jack’s expression when he retrieved the antidote, it didn’t seem fake,” referring to his intense reaction to Lucian's questioning. Even without knowing their history, Elektra understood that if Jack needed Roxanne in the future, he likely wouldn't have harmed her.
Lucian could only suppress his rage after hearing their words.
Zayne arrived with food, but their anxiety prevented them from eating.
Elektra felt a strange connection to the unconscious Roxanne, whom she’d never met or spoken to, yet felt a kinship similar to Madilyn’s.
