Chapter 1698: Is He Gone?

Roxanne sat up slowly, reassuring Lucian, "Don't worry. I'm fine. The doctors say I'm recovering, and I can feel the antidote working."

Lucian regarded her with a gloomy expression. "Do you remember what you said?"

Roxanne chuckled. "I'll tell you if anything happens."

Lucian's worry eased slightly. A hint of worry, however, fleetingly crossed Roxanne's face.

Noticing her distress, Lucian asked softly, "What are you thinking about?"

Roxanne quickly composed herself. "I'm worried about the children. I can't help but wonder how they're doing."

His suspicion vanished. "Since you're awake, we can call them tonight. They'll be relieved to hear from you."

Roxanne nodded. "Hopefully." She looked down again.

Lucian's brow furrowed. "Are you feeling any discomfort?"

Roxanne looked up innocently, caressing her belly with a sigh. "After being unconscious for several days, I'm a little hungry. Thinking of the children and their desserts made me crave some."

"I'll get you some," Lucian said immediately.

Roxanne frowned. "But I just woke up, and I'm not allowed to eat greasy foods. Desserts are out of the question."

Lucian's heart softened. "Bear with it for a while, okay? You can have some fruit." He patted her head affectionately.

Roxanne hummed after a moment. "I want fruit from the stall near the research institute. Their fruit is so sweet." She glanced at him shyly. "Am I being too troublesome? You could get some downstairs, too."

Lucian smiled gently. "It's no trouble at all. I'll get you some now. I'll tell the doctors to wait outside. Just let them know if you need anything."

Roxanne nodded. "Be careful."

Lucian left, instructing the doctors to wait inside. They assumed Roxanne had suffered a relapse. Upon entering the ward and seeing her sitting up, safe and sound, they exchanged bewildered glances. Where was Mr. Farwell going?

Before they could speculate, Roxanne's voice rang out, "Is he gone?" She looked toward the doorway.

The doctors froze, realizing she was addressing them, and that "he" referred to Lucian. Their confusion deepened. Had they argued? Mr. Farwell had been so anxious when Ms. Jarvis fainted; how could they be fighting now? Their interaction had seemed awkward upon their arrival.
