Chapter 1731: Marriage Registration

In the ward, specialists bustled about, too preoccupied to greet Lucian. Roxanne was in critical condition; her blood vessels were hardening, threatening a fatal rupture. Seeing her pale face, drained lips, and fringe damp with cold sweat, Lucian could only watch from a distance, unable to approach the bed. Her fragility was heartbreaking.

Meanwhile, at Damaris Group, Jack sat in his office, his assistant, Kevin, standing nervously before him.

โ€œWhat time is it?โ€ Jack demanded, his tone frigid. This was his third inquiry that night.

Kevin checked his watch. โ€œMr. Damaris, itโ€™s ten oโ€™clock.โ€

โ€œTenโ€ฆโ€ Jackโ€™s eyes narrowed. Two hours until dawn. The drugโ€™s effects should be peaking; Roxanne should be in agonizing pain. She could die within two hours. Why wasnโ€™t Lucian begging for mercy?

A thought struck him, darkening his expression. โ€œDid theyโ€ฆ develop an antidote?โ€ he murmured, then shook his head. โ€œImpossible. I spent countless hours perfecting that poison. They couldnโ€™t create an antidote in a single day! Not even Roxanne could!โ€

Roxanneโ€™s life hung in the balance. She wouldnโ€™t have the strength to synthesize an antidote, and Lucianโ€™s associates were clearly incapable. They were foolishly resisting!

Jack sneered. โ€œLetโ€™s see how long they can wait.โ€ He held up the vial of solution, a satisfied gleam in his eyes. Lucianโ€™s plea would only make it harder for Roxanne, given the time-delaying agents heโ€™d included.

His mood improved. Turning to Kevin, he asked, โ€œAny progress on the matter I assigned you?โ€ He referred to the investigation into Lucianโ€™s marriage, launched after his morning call with Roxanne. If Lucian was deceitful about that, he likely was about everything else.

Kevin cowered. โ€œMr. Damarisโ€ฆ I found no record of Mr. Farwellโ€™s marriage registration at City Hall. The Lane family hasnโ€™t responded.โ€ The marriage certificate was likely forged.

โ€œHe lied!โ€ Jackโ€™s grip tightened on the vial; his face flushed with rage. โ€œWhat about the ten subsidiary companies? Have the transfers been processed?โ€

Kevin, terrified, wished the floor would swallow him. โ€œNot yet. Mr. Farwell must appear in person. Howeverโ€ฆโ€

Heโ€™d been tricked. The tension in the office was palpable.
