Chapter 1732: No Reason to Refuse
At ten-thirty that night, Jack still hadn't heard from Lucian, and frustration mounted. Had they really developed the antidote? Doubt gnawed at him.
Then, his phone on the table rang. He froze, checking the caller ID. Seeing Lucian's name, a smirk played on his lips. "Well, some things are inevitable," he muttered.
He ignored the ringing phone, pacing his office before stopping at the floor-to-ceiling windows. He reveled in the Horington view as the ringing persisted.
"Mr. Damaris, aren't you going to answer Mr. Farwell?" Kevin asked, perplexed. Mr. Damaris had waited all night; why ignore the call now?
Jack whirled around, glaring. "Are you stupid? He's only calling because he's desperate. What if I let him stew a while longer?" He wanted Lucian to suffer for his deception.
When the ringing ceased, Kevin cautiously observed Jack's slightly tense expression. Clearly, he wasn't sure if Lucian would call again. Tension filled the office once more.
Just as Kevin contemplated escape, his own phone rang. It was Lucian.
"Mr. Damaris!" Kevin hurried to Jack.
Jack glanced at the phone and answered. "Hello, Mr. Farwell! Forgetful, aren't you? Didn't I say the poison would act up tonight? Why are you calling now?" he taunted.
Lucian, ignoring the sarcasm, asked, "Where are you?"
Jack let out a cold snort. "I told you, I'm the only one who can develop the antidote. Since you didn't believe me, why are you looking for me now? Besides, we're both businessmen. Don't you find yourself untrustworthy, Mr. Farwell?"
A dark glint flashed in Lucian's eyes as he looked at the suffering Roxanne. Gritting his teeth, he demanded, "What do you want? I'll double what I offered before!"
"Only now realizing the urgency? Too late," Jack said, a sinister smile playing on his lips. "You know I'm meticulous, Mr. Farwell. You tricked me; you'll pay the price!"
Lucian's voice was deep. "As long as you give me the antidote, I'll do anything. I swear on Roxanne's life!"
Jack, knowing Roxanne's importance to Lucian, smirked. "Well, since you put it that way, I have no reason to refuse. After all," he added meaningfully, "I've been looking forward to working with Ms. Jarvis."
Lucian, wanting no further delays, asked, "Where are you? I'll come to you."
