Chapter 1766: Eyeing the Pie
Seeing his sister's reaction, Jonathan assessed the situation. What exactly was that man's motive? His earlier suspicion of having sent Aubree abroad confirmed him as an enemy of the Farwell family. Yet, he'd specifically arranged for Old Mr. Lomax to treat Roxanne. His actions were peculiar, baffling Jonathan.
Frieda, suppressing her indignation under her brother's authoritative gaze, retorted, โWhy do you think I did so? Can't I achieve something for myself? My entire life, the Queen family has groomed you as the heir. What about me? No one takes me seriously. Am I merely a haughty daughter of a prominent family in other people's eyes? Am I not worthy of my own ambition?โ
Her voice rising with emotion, she declared, โJonathan, starting today, I am your competitor. Unlike you, I won't blindly follow the Farwell family!โ
Jonathan's suppressed fury ignited. โThe Farwell family hasn't mistreated us; they've been kind. Considering them enemies is foolish. Besides, Lucian will undoubtedly credit the Queen family for securing Old Mr. Lomax's help. I'll grant you any benefit you desire then.โ
He left immediately. Frieda's expression shifted, her gaze unreadable.
At the Farwell residence, Lucian worked on his laptop, catching up on accumulated work. While Cayden handled most matters, certain deals and contracts required his personal review and signature.
Roxanne, observing his focus, brewed him a cup of coffee, her eyes bright with affection.
Lucian met her gaze, a subtle smile gracing his lips. โYour poison hasn't fully cleared; you need more rest. No need to fuss over me. Sleep,โ he murmured, taking a sip of coffee.
โOkay. Don't overwork yourself! I'll check on the children.โ
The peaceful life felt incredibly relaxing to Roxanne. Despite nearly losing her life, sheโd also gained something.
She went upstairs. Archie, Benny, and Estella, exhausted from play, were asleep. Roxanne planned a hot bath.
Shortly after, a car arrived, and Jonathan burst into the living room, agitated. Could something else have happened, requiring Lucian's late-night summons?
โWhat's wrong, Lucian?โ he asked directly.
Lucian closed his laptop. โCalm down. It's nothing serious. Sit. I need to discuss something.โ
Reassured, Jonathan sat, watching Lucian methodically brew coffee. Lucian's skill was evident as he presented Jonathan with a nearly full cup. โCoffee first,โ he offered.
The rich aroma was invigorating. โLucian, you've been irritable lately. You're finally back to your usual calm,โ Jonathan commented, taking the cup.
Lucian chuckled in agreement. โTrue! She's the most important thing in my life. I called you to discuss the Damaris family's assets.โ
Despite the family's downfall, their assets held value, especially for a prestigious family with a history in traditional medicine. Jack Damaris possessed business acumen, but lacked integrity.
Following the Damaris family's collapse, many were eyeing their assets, hoping for a share.
