Chapter 1821: Not Afraid of Death

The old middle school building, renovated into an elderly activity center after the school relocated, was frequented by nearby residents. Many retired teachers still lived in the dorm building on the grounds. Unable to drive their cars inside, the three visitors reached the dorm on foot.

The building was dilapidated. Each of its five floors contained a series of classroom-like rooms. The clothing hanging outside the doors indicated few teachers remained. Elektra's prior call had secured their meeting with a middle-aged woman, Jennifer Valentine, the principal's daughter.

"Greetings," Jennifer said, her tear-streaked face revealing her distress. "My father just woke up. Feel free to speak with him."

Lucian and Roxanne followed Elektra into the room. Lucian asked, "What did the hospital say about Mr. Valentine's condition? He should have a medical record, right?"

"Thank you for visiting my father, Mr. Farwell," Jennifer replied, her sorrow evident. "However, they say he has no hope of recovery."

Lucian and Elektra's expressions fell as they saw Nicholas's frail condition. Even Roxanne sighed inwardly, contemplating the common fears of old age: debilitating illness, depleting family resources, and a painful, undignified death. She recalled his past vibrant spirit dedicated to education, a stark contrast to his now clouded eyes.

Lucian and Elektra had to speak loudly to ensure Nicholas heard them. Lucian then introduced Roxanne: "This is my wife, Mr. Valentine. She's a doctor, here to examine you."

Nicholas smiled emotionally. Jennifer, abandoning her sorrow, excitedly grasped her father's hand. "Dad, let Dr. Jarvis examine you. Ms. Lane and Mr. Farwell will pay for your treatment. You don't need to worry about money anymore!"

"No! I don't need it! I'm fine! I've accepted my end! I have students all over the world! I'm not afraid of death! I'm notโ€”" Nicholas declared firmly, each word punctuated with conviction.

Jennifer presented Nicholas's medical records to Roxanne. The dim light prompted Roxanne to step outside to read them. Lucian asked Jennifer to join her and explain the situation.

As Nicholas spoke at length, inquiring about Lucian and Elektra's well-being, he praised Lucian's past donations to the schoolโ€”the Farwell Group had financed the new campus. Lucian listened, feeling remorseful. "I haven't been doing enough. I can't believe I never visited you!"

"It's fine if you were too busy, considering your family and businesses," Nicholas said. "But know this: your family has significantly contributed to our city's economy. Don't feel bad."

Lucian nodded silently.

Outside, after hearing Jennifer's explanation and reviewing the medical records, Roxanne considered Nicholas's condition, which required substantial funds. "Hmm," she mused, "I think I can try using the acupuncture technique I've been learning, in conjunction with my own medicine."
