Chapter 1899: A Proper Chat
After Estella's illness improved, James disappeared for six months, spending his time globe-trotting. He contacted Lucian intermittently, occasionally sending photographs of stunning scenery. He also traveled between Alendor and Archulea, claiming to research the objective laws of human psychological evolution. He pursued this professionally, even publishing several research papers. However, only Lucian knew James simply sought respite from the burdens of his family's extensive business.
The Lann family owned a substantial enterprise in Xendale, dealing in tea, coffee, lumber, dry goods, and more. In recent years, collaboration with the Farwell Group had significantly expanded their foreign trade. Yet, James remained content as a relaxed psychologist, enjoying his travels.
When Roxanne heard James's name, she readily agreed, her response almost instantaneous. "I'm sure there will be no mistake, as long as Lucian recommends him." She added, "What excellent timing! He'll surely return for our wedding. You can then persuade him to stay and help manage Flora Verba Group."
Lucian, reflecting on Jonathan and James, found their lives strangely reversed. Schoolmates once, James had been meticulous and studious, excelling in every subject. Jonathan, conversely, was boisterous, athletic, and less academically inclined. Their choices in the face of family responsibilities had drastically altered their personalities and life paths.
After Lucian's explanation of James's background, Roxanne expressed doubt. "But if he avoids his family's business, why would he manage Flora Verba Group?"
"I believe he desires your medical expertise. Simply agree to teach him some of your skills."
Roxanne readily agreed; any medical professional would welcome the continuation and advancement of medical knowledge.
Having selected a candidate, the couple departed for the wedding venue to finalize arrangements.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Madilyn was working when a knock interrupted her. Jonathan entered, eliciting a smile. "Mr. Queen, your stomach troubles again?" she asked lightly, recalling his improved gastritis and healed gastric erosions during his last checkup.
He shook his head, gesturing towards his chest. "Madilyn, I feel something's wrong here."
Startled, she rose. "A heart condition? Your heart rate, blood pressure, and arteries were fine during your last examination." Madilyn's mother's recent brush with death from a heart condition made this a sensitive subject.
Jonathan shook his head. Approaching her desk, he sat. "Sit down, Madilyn. I want a proper chat."
Observing his calm demeanor, she complied. Suspecting his depression, a heavy feeling settled in her heart. His relapse seemed more severe than before.
