Chapter 1900: The Life of Jonathan

Jonathan and Madilyn had a long conversation, lasting two hours. It never occurred to her that he'd lived such a life.

As a young child, possibly kindergarten age, Jonathan fell behind in speech and language development. This led to a diagnosis of intellectual disability, resulting in persistent gossip and questioning of his abilities. His parents' unwavering support prevented him from being institutionalized. Frieda's birth, however, somewhat shifted the adults' focus. His energetic sister's popularity contrasted sharply with his own experience. Consequently, he became increasingly reluctant to share his thoughts.

He grew up, befriending Lucian and enjoying what was perhaps his happiest time. Reduced adult attention afforded him greater freedom, and his trust in Lucian solidified. He unquestioningly followed Lucian's lead, never pausing to consider his own desires. He eventually concluded that unexpressed thoughts and feelings seemed inconsequential.

His grades declined in middle school, but Lucian and Elektra quietly assisted him. He later befriended James, a prodigious student. Jonathan envied James's aptitude for rapid learning. He felt dejected, avoiding home due to the disappointment of everyone except his parents regarding his academic performance. They accused him of derailing their plans, his uncle even questioning his suitability to inherit the Queen family businesses. This period proved both his most vulnerable and strongest.

The high school entrance exams brought his most painful experience. His poor grades necessitated separation from Lucian and Elektra, who attended different schools suited to their academic levels. His parents offered to leverage connections to secure him a place in a better private high school, but he refused.

High school found him isolated, rarely speaking. Though Lucian invited him out, Jonathan retreated further into himself. One night, he abruptly changed. He resolved to memorize any word missed on the first attempt a hundred times, committing formulas to memory by force. Failing this, he would prick his arm with a needle. This self-inflicted pain, surprisingly, enhanced his memorization.

Lucian discovered this drastic method and intervened, replacing it with push-ups. Jonathan began exercising while studying. He found himself physically fit and talented in sports, even dreaming of national and international athletic competition.

This dream, however, proved unattainable. His improved academics secured him a place at a top business university. His ecstatic parents urged him onward, anticipating his inheritance of the family business. Though seemingly fulfilling their hopes, he became emotionally detached, relying solely on rote memorization. He amassed facts on successful business case studies and various schemes, lacking genuine comprehension. His limited understanding stemmed from years of forced memorization.
