Chapter 2069: Evidence Against Us
Meanwhile, in a mansion on the outskirts, Winnie paced restlessly, checking her phone almost every minute. Yosef, his arms in casts, lay on the couch, immobile.
"Argh! I hate Lucian Farwell! He could have hit me anywhere, but he had to break my arms! I can't even use my phone or play cards!"
Seeing his mother's unease, Yosef sighed. "Mom, aren't you worrying too much? You were so calm at the police station. Why are you so scared now?"
"You know nothing! I'm worried about what Roxanne's mother left behindโevidence of our crimes!" Winnie fumed.
Yosef was momentarily shocked, then grew cold. "What evidence? That has nothing to do with me! I don't even remember being involved. You were the one who poisoned Roxanne's mother."
Winnie was furious at his flippancy. "Oh, you were involved," she muttered, fixing a steely gaze on him. "You were the one who carried out the deed."
Yosef, stunned, would have leaped from the couch if his arms weren't broken. "Don't be ridiculous, Mom," he retorted. "I was five years old! How could I have helped you murder someone? You should turn yourself in if you're so scared!"
This was the final straw for Winnie. She slapped him. "I have such a useless son! Why is my life so full of suffering? I want you out of my sight once your sister is back!" she cried.
Yosef gritted his teeth. "Enough. Why are you crying after slapping me? Yuliana's almost home. She can help you, since I can't."
Car horns sounded from the courtyard. "Stop crying, Mom. I think Yuliana's back."
Winnie quickly dabbed away her tears. She rushed downstairs to greet her daughter.
Yuliana arrived with four nondescript men. Their ordinariness was their best cover; their job was helping wealthy clients with discreet investigations.
Winnie's face lit up, but Yuliana's remained stern. "Mom, be careful," she said, entering the living room with the men. "You were just released; your every move will be monitored. You haven't gone out, have you?"
Winnie initially denied it, but under Yuliana's gaze, she faltered. "I-I went out last night. Will I be followed? The police don't have any evidence, thoughโฆ"
Yuliana's face darkened. "What makes you think you're safe? Where did you go? Do you think Roxanne will let you off the hook?"
Winnie, now regretful, stammered, "I was going to the Jarvis residence, but I got worried and passed by without stopping. That's not enough to expose me, is it?"
